Book of the New Sun

Anyone else read this? It is kind of old, but I noticed "Shadow and Claw" on the shelf at Barnes and Noble and decided to give it a shot.

I'm only just about finished with the first two books out of five, but I'm enjoying it a lot. The basic story is about a torturer who is exiled by his guild for showing mercy to a "client," and the passing of events after that. The entire story is told from Sevarian's point of view as if he were recalling what happened at some future time, and the world is a somewhat futuristic, yet decaying, Earth. Anyway, it's a good read, if a little dark.

I read this a few years ago. I found it to be a fascinating read for the first few books, but the last one or two got a bit strange for my taste. I think Gene Wolfe just ran out of material and tried to wing it at the end.
