Hmmm, tough call...

Hitchcock was obviously one of the best of all time and John Ford had his moments too. The Manchurian Candidate and Seven Days in May are two of my favorite dramas so I'll give John Frankenheimer a quick nod.

Current faves? Ron Howard (while definitely cheesy at times) has turned out some really entertaining stuff as has Tom Hanks. Clint Eastwood has occasional bursts of brilliance too, I guess. Oh, and I gotta give Rob Reiner a mention if only for Spinal Tap and The Princess Bride.

Some of my faves:

Terry Gilliam
Quentin Tarantino
Francis Ford Coppola
Martin Scorsese
Troy Duffy
Cory Yuen

THere are many others. I do not have a single favorite as different directors have completely different styles and its not fair to compare them.

Another one I cannot believe I forgot is Kevin Smith =).

As far as John Woo - I enjoy his original HK stuff but his american stuff generally sucks.

Yeah, I'll second that. I've always loved all the old Chow Yun Fat and/or John Woo stuff. The slow-mo work in Hard Boiled is beautiful, and I love the creative stuff like the chainsaw swordfight in "Tiger on the Beat", although I don't believe the latter has anything to do with Woo.
