Ffxi???
Anyone play it? Been thinking about getting it, just not too keen on the pay to play per month deal...but it does look like a really deep MMOLRPG...

Compared to the vast majority of other MMORPG's out there it is crap. I have played almost every MMORPG out there (Paying per month usually gives awsome games because you have to pay for the upkeep), and FFXI rates as one of the lowest and I am a HUGE FF fan. I have played every single one including the non american released ones.
If you want a good MMO, try City of Heroes, Everquest, or Dark Age of Camelot. Stay away from Lineage II, Horizons, and FFXI =)

If I had to rate them all in order...(the ones I've played)
FFXI and EQ
Lineage
Lineage II (big disappointment...first was much better)
Ultima Online (3 years ago I'd say it outdid EQ and Lineage...but it has been butchered beyond recognition.)
City of Heroes (fun to screw around with in beta, not worth $$ per month)
Biggest problem with FFXI is the time you need to play it. That goes for any mmorpg though. The job system is a great feature, the quests are a bit more involved...the missions are probably the best quest feature though and are almost like following your own storyline instead of the usual "get item X and go here and do this." The cutscenes are also a nice feature. I'd rate it as one of the better ones out there right now. EQ is a little higher up on the fun scale, but I see good things for FFXI...probably the only good one out of a lot of new releases.
That being said, haven't had time for it lately in between school, working out, friends, trying to find a job, and just life in general. Took a break from this type of game for at least three months.
If you get it (or get EQ for that matter) let me know. Can help you get started on either of them.

I personally LOVE City of Heroes. The release is far better than the beta and well worth a monthly fee. It is the new official MMO of my gaming board and almost everyone has switched to it from whatever MMO's they were playing.

Did it change that much between the last week of beta and the release?

Well a bunch of my friends play it and it looks like a decent game as far as I've seen, any reasons why you didn't like it other than "its crap"?

It is designed for a console so PC based gamers are at a loss when it comes to UI customizations and tweaks that are available on ANY other MMO. The skill system isnt very well done and I don't like the way the Job system works. Plus since the game has been out for over a year in Japan the Japanese players have a distinct advantage over the American players in terms of gear and the like.

Oh ok yeah my buddy was talking about how there's a lot more lvl 75 (highest level) characters that are all japanese compared to a very limited few north americans that have been able to get to that level. I just like how diverse the game itself is, you can fight, fish, ride chocobo's and grow a freakin house plant! lol, thanks for the heads up, its 80 bucks here in canada so im just trying to get as much info as i can :

You can do the majority of that stuff (Sans Chocobo) in most other MMORPG's. Those are considered pretty much normal actions =)

I only got to level 40 on there, few people in my LS were at 50-60 last time I played though, all english speakers. There is a translator, so communication w/ japanese is possible when needed, though obviously limited.
As far as the interface goes, ya can buy a cheap USB adapter for your PS2 controllers, or if you already have a gaming controller with a similar setup you can set it like that. I'm probably going to get a wireless keyboard soon so I can hook my PC into my big screen and just sit back on the couch to play games and stuff, which probably means I'll go get a wireless PS2 controller too.
Anyway as far as MMO's go I like FFXI and EQ right now the best. FFXI is a bit superior in the graphics department, but EQ has about 5-7 or so expansions of extra content while FFXI is only just about to put out its second so it is still behind in that area. They'll probably also increase the level cap eventually so the higher level people keep having higher heights to reach.
Be careful tho, these games can take over your life without you noticing. Pricewise the game is average. Most range between $12.99-15.00. UO used to be $9.99 but they upped the price, only way to pay $9.99 per month on it now is to buy 6 months worth of time at once.
