It's really hard to say... "rock music" is such a loose definition. Let's face it, for a tiny example out of an iceberg, Metallica, U2, Blink182, Nine Inch Nails, Red Hot Chilli Peppers all play "rock music" but their styles are totally different, how can one compare each other?

I think two of the best songs influence wise for a lot of metalheads would be

Crazy Train by Ozzy (Randy Rhoads on guitar) and Mr. Crowley by the same artist.

I like kim Mitchel too, go for a soda was blasting out of my windows just the other day, along with lager and ale.

My favourites would be in no particular order something like
Tangerine - Led Zep
Wish you were here (whole album) - Pink Floyd
One - U2
Don't Believe a word - Thin Lizzy
If you want blood (whole album) - AC/DC
Superstition - Stevie Wonder
Rooster - Alice in Chains
Black Dog - Led Zep
Black and White - M16

Wow, thanks for that link!

Does this include metal?

The song that got me into Iron Maiden was "Rime of the Ancient Mariner". It's still one of my favorite songs of all time.

I think this would be an easier thing to vote on if we did in catagories: Best metal song, best progressive rock song, best classic rock song, etc. As maniac points out "rock" covers such a large genre.

LOL :

Blisters in the sun by the Violent Femmes. Only reason is because i have never been anywhere where everyone doesn't know the words.

Have you heard this one?

TENACIOUS D LYRICS

"Tribute"

[Spoken]
This is the greatest and best song in the world... Tribute.

Long time ago me and my brother Kyle here,
we was hitchhikin' down a long and lonesome road.
All of a sudden, there shined a shiny demon... in the middle... of the road.
And he said:
[Sung]
"Play the best song in the world, or I'll eat your soul." (soul)
[Spoken]
Well me and Kyle, we looked at each other,
and we each said... "Okay."
[Sung]
And we played the first thing that came to our heads,
Just so happened to be,
The Best Song in the World, it was The Best Song in the World.

Look into my eyes and it's easy to see
One and one make two, two and one make three,
It was destiny.
Once every hundred-thousand years or so,
When the sun doth shine and the moon doth glow
And the grass doth grow...

Needless to say, the beast was stunned.
Whip-crack went his Whoopy tail,
And the beast was done.
He asked us: "(snort) Be you angels?"
And we said, "Nay. We are but men."
Rock!
Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh-ah-ah,
Ohhh, whoah, ah-whoah-oh!

This is not The Greatest Song in the World, no.
This is just a tribute.
Couldn't remember The Greatest Song in the World, no, no.
This is a tribute, oh, to The Greatest Song in the World,
All right! It was The Greatest Song in the World,
All right! It was the best mutha****in' song the greatest song in the world.
[2-part skat]
[Spoken]
And the peculiar thing is this my friends:
the song we sang on that fateful night it didn't actually sound
anything like this song.
[Sung]
This is just a tribute! You gotta believe it!
And I wish you were there! Just a matter of opinion.
Ah, ****! Good God, God lovin',
So surprised to find you can't stop it.
[Skat]
All right! All right!

I really like freebird, but I pretty much hold all the songs on the Dazed and Confused Soundtrack to greatness. There is no greatest rock song ever, to many different opinions.

The greatest rock song in history? Wow there are so many good ones. And so many opinions too...but since my opinion is the only one that matters when it comes to music...the greatest is easy. That would be the single best song ever by the metal god Ozzy Osbourne.

See you on the other side

Voices, a thousand, thousand voices
Whispering, the time has passed for choices
Golden days are passing over, yeah

I cant seem to see you baby
Although my eyes are open wide
But I know Ill see you once more
When I see you, Ill see you on the other side
Yes, Ill see you, Ill see you on the other side

Leaving, I hate to see you cry
Grieving, I hate to say goodbye
Dust and ash forever, yeah

Though I know we mus be parted
As sure as stars are in the sky
Im gonna see when it comes to glory
And Ill see you, Ill see you on the other side
Yes Ill see you, Ill see you on the other side

Never thought Id feel like this
Strange to be alone, yeah
But well be together
Carved in stone, carved in stone, carved in stone

Hold me, hold me thight, Im falling
Far away. distant voices calling
Im so cold. I need you darling, yeah

I was down, but now Im flying
Straight across the great divide
I know youre crying, but Ill stop you crying
When I see you, I see you on the other side
Yes. Ill see you. see you on the othe side
Im gonna see you. see you on the other side
God knows Ill see you, see you on the other side, yeah

Ill see you. see you on the othe side
Im gonna see you. see you on the other side
God knows Ill see you, see you on the other side, yeah
I wanna see you, yeah, yeah, yeah, see you on the other side
God knows Ill see you, see you on the other side, yeah
Im gonna see you. see you on the other side
