Guitar lessons

I want to learn how to play the bass guitar. Some of my friends say that I should learn how to play the guitar first, then learn bass...your opinions?

It's up to you really....I started with the guitar and then moved on to bass afterwards, but if bass is all you want to focus on, then go for it. :

You may find that learning guitar is more rewarding than bass because of its versatility. Once you've learned the guitar basics, bass is quite simple to pick up (except for the bleeding fingers though )

Depending on tuning, the strings on bass (4 stringer) are the same as the top 4 strings on guitar. If you learn bass first you have a good foundation by becoming more familiar with the fretboard. But as mentioned above, bass by itself, does not have as much 'freedom'.

I'm a sound engineer, and one of the bands I work with features a 7 String Guitar, an 8 String Guitar, and a bassist with 2 different 8 String basses.

Anyway.. learning Guitar then moving onto Bass will probably give you a broader view of theory and practical on a Bass, but it's like learning learning to drive by starting in a McLaren racing car (not to make the Bass seem dull). If you want to learn Bass, learn bass. Learn from someone who's got a good background in funk and stuff, someone who's gonna go beyond teaching you just how to pluck a few rootnotes to a song, and teach you how to play the instrument so it stands up as it's own section.

i started out on bass and then moved on to guitar. i love bass, i think its great. i think if tahts waht you want to play right now, go straight to it. you can always switch later. i think knowing bass first and finding music that was interesting on bass instead of guitar gave me a different look on music when i started playing guitar, which has helped me out a lot. make sure you learn to read music as well. don't just play other people's music from tablature sites either, learn to create your own music and learn to paly songs on your own. btw... aw-de-oh was right on with finding someone into funk. **** is some of the most fun stuff to paly on bass, and from there you might want to move on to jazz, or take a different route in rock, pop, or classical.
