I'm a sound engineer, and one of the bands I work with features a 7 String Guitar, an 8 String Guitar, and a bassist with 2 different 8 String basses.
Anyway.. learning Guitar then moving onto Bass will probably give you a broader view of theory and practical on a Bass, but it's like learning learning to drive by starting in a McLaren racing car (not to make the Bass seem dull). If you want to learn Bass, learn bass. Learn from someone who's got a good background in funk and stuff, someone who's gonna go beyond teaching you just how to pluck a few rootnotes to a song, and teach you how to play the instrument so it stands up as it's own section.
