Movies:
As I'm getting ready for work, sometimes as early as 3:45AM, I get to find some pretty uhm,......unusual stuff on the tele.
This morning, it's the movie "Cube."
Ever seen it?
I'll not be able to watch the whole thing because I have to leave in 20 minutes, but it makes for good background while I'm eating breakfast and getting dressed.
A group of people suddenly find themselves "trapped" in this mechanical "cube" -- that's just a series of 6 walls, all with doors, which open to other cubes.....most rooms are boobytrapped pretty badly (some with motion detectors, other with sensors which detect biologics)....the group consists of an unlikely group,....a doctor, an escape artist, a cop, a student, a guy who seems like all he is, is the freak out stir-crazy guy (if you've ever seen Langoliers, it's like the guy who goes nuts and wants to kill everyone to get to his meeting in Boston).
Turns out all these people were stripped of all their clothes and put in jumpsuits, with nothing else. They all have certain "gifts" (they just discover) which they're supposed to figure out, to work together, to get their way out of this labrynth of cubes.
It's like this puzzle of math (Kitara would love it, it has to with solving prime number equations)...but it's just this endless chain....Test of physical endurance, psychological and emotional stability, social skills, puzzle solving problems...
And in case anyone gets bored....the traps, when they're hit, are bloody, gorey and horrific. Like acid burning a face off,....a wire grid dicing a man up into cubes,...blades and fire coming out of the walls.... So hey it's got a little of everything....
Anyone see it? Pretty interesting actually!

Yes I've seen it, I like films that try to be different like that. It doesn't have a car chase in it or a gun battle (that I can remember) so that's a plus for starters lol. I always just mentally switch off as soon as the clichés start flowing in films.

I thought the acting was horrific! I liked the whole concept of the movie and the process they had to follow to get out was interesting, but as far and the "movie" goes I would have much rather read the book (if there was one). It was interesting to think about why there where there, what was the signifigance of the one that got out (oops, hope I didn't ruin it for anyone), and stuff like that. I actually just saw the movie about a week or 2 ago.
Cube2: Hypercube is out as well. They add a 4th dimention to the cube, time? I don't remember because I just saw the ad, but I remember someone posting here that it sucked.
LOL Symzie - you're right no gun battles .

Well, since I feel like posting and I haven't seen Cube or Cube 2, I'll just rattle on about some other movies, ok?
Return of the Dragon w/ Bruce Lee. (NOT enter the dragon) Have you seen this? Great martial arts flick, with some of the best nunchuck work Bruce did on screen. There's also a really cool scene where he's stretching on the balcony and he does this weird lat flex with his arms out horizontally, and I swear his friggin lats go from his elbows to his waist! If you haven't seen this, those are two good reasons to check it out. Plus there's all kinds of silly 70s lingo & attire to giggle at.
Fight Club. Is it just me, or did Brad Pitt have like 2% bodyfat in this film. For cryin out loud, I want to know how the hell he does it. The zone diet can't be all he's doing to achieve this.
The Legend of Drunken Master w/ Jackie Chan. My all time favorite Jackie Chan flick. I just love how he smashes two big jugs of booze together and then guzzles them in the street before beating the hell out of anybody who approaches. (including his father, till Jackie's vision clears up a bit). Lots of good fight choreography in this one, and it's when Jackie was still young and ridiculously fast & crazy.
Hard Boiled and/or the Killer. Great John Woo directed films with Chow Yun Fat in the lead role. Hard to find in the US, but if you enjoy (can handle) asian films with subtitles, these are great action flicks with some innovative directing.
The Blood of Heroes w/ Rutger Hauer. I'm a big Rutger Hauer fan, and this is one of my favorites. Basically it's about a post-apocalyptic world in which the main sport people play is similar to football, but with a dog skull instead of a pigskin. I won't give away anymore than that, but if you enjoy B movies with some flavor, this one has Joan Chen as some added spice.
Well, that's about all the weird/obscure movies I can think of at this time. I guess I'll go back to work.

Does this situation remind you of another move which I can;t think of the name but it's a mechanical house and in the basement this guy has trapped all these demons and when he adds the last one the house begins to come alive and open this portal to hell. It's got the foreign guy who was on the t.v. show wings and shannon elizabeth, the girl from American Pie

13 ghosts or 13th floor? There are so many 13's out there!
I never saw the end of Cube actually, - so Kitara, which one makes it out, and why do they survive? (Dont' worry, even knowing the endings of movies doesn't spoil it for me,...I'm not a "goal oriented" person,...I enjoy the "process" and "experience" of things,....like movies,....the outcome isn't the answer for me!) But I AM curious about who finally makes it and what the conclusion is as to why.
I adore mind-screw movies that are plots within plots, or where the twists and turns really mess with you,....
Memento was a good one. My Husband couldn't get past the first 10 minutes he was bored out of his mind. Me, I enjoyed it once I got about 1/3 of the way into it and saw what and how it was unfolding.
I really love things that aren't what they seem to be, -- sort of like people,.... when you see the drop dead gorgeous blond bombshell and make assumptions about her .... only to find out she actually IS a nuclear physicist! Or the guy with tattoos and a leather jacket on a Harley with a degree in business from Harvard! I dig on those incongruities.
As for subtitle movies, growing up in an artsy town, I saw my share of them. And being married to a man who loves the Samurai culture, besides the armour, weapons, books, etc., we've got,...we also have a pretty decent collection of flicks.
Another good movie (not related) that I don't think got half the press it should have was: BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF! Ohhh my God, that was just brilliant! Full of plot twists, the filming was phenomenol (very much like Band of Brothers in style), the costumes were filled with detail, the fight sequences were choreographed artistically,.... the beauty of the film was fierce,....I like the way it mislead audiences into drawing erroneous conclusions.....red herrings and suspension of disbelief....

I was in the same boat as you, I loved it and my wife hated it! I liked the fact that it just eventually "clicked" when I figured out what was going on.
I sometimes like the oddball movies better than the the so called "normal" ones

Memento was great, I watched his new film last weekend - Insomnia, it's quite good but not as good as Memento. I liked Donnie Darko, especially the song at the end, sad. But work that one out..

Didn't like it, Colin Farrell is a good actor but it was a predictable plot, just like a film with Wesley Snipes in it (forgotten the name)

That was a kickass movie. I bought it on DVD when it first came out, and I enjoyed the hell out of it. I thought it was going to be predictable, having seen the previews... but it's definately not what it seems. Thumbs up!

Jock - The Wesly snipes movie you are thinking of is "Liberty Stands Still"
I myself am a movie buff. I used to do movie reviews but got bored of doing them since i wasnt getting paid heh.
The cube was an excellent independant film in my opinion. Many i-films dont make it big because they are not mainstream. Some good examples are Pi, Run Lola Run, Das Experiement and Boondock Saints. All great movies that many people never see cause they are I-films (Although Das Experiement is set for a US Release, but it isnt getting much publicity)
Some of my personal faves (Aside from those above): Memento, Shawshank Redemption (And the parody - Sharktank Redemption), Usual Suspects, Requiem for a dream, Clerks, 12 Monkeys (One of Gilliams Best along with Brazil and Time Bandits) and Donnie Darko.
*EDIT* I accidentally posted halfway though the post lol
