What, and lose the charm?! Strained rhymes (using a minimal 400-word vocabulary ... even Koko the gorilla has a 1000-word vocabulary) , boring and redundant rhythms, surrounded by marketed gang-mentality ... that's rap, defined.

im not saying most rap isnt redundant in its redundancy, but there is some isnt. i dont listen to a lot of rap but the TWO rappers i can stand are ludacris and eminem. for the most part, the rest of them need to read a thesaurus. thats just my crazy way of thinking though.

The same has been said about country music, only about drinkin, losing an old lady, or a truck.

When you look at music, a lot of it is redundant.

Dude, my parents used to listen to country all the time. Do you know just how many songs there are about home made corn bread? ...and sitting on the front porch...

DMX is not your average rapper. He's always had his own, "hardcore" style. Your average rapper today raps about money, women, parties, money, high-end alcohol (although they couldn't tell you what region of France that certain champagne comes from), big trucks with 22 inch spinning rims and a TV with a playstation built into every headrest, and did I mention money?

Rappers are nothing but poor kids from the ghetto that never had **** in their life, and in the wink of an eye they are millionaires who act like immature idiots because they've never really learned what to do with money other than to spend it on material possessions

I took "Rappers" out of your quote so we could all write in "NBA Basketball Players" ... or whatever over-paid, entertainment-based group you want. :

Well I've listened to a couple of rap songs - one by Eminem in which he talks about locking his pregnant GF in a car trunk and slitting her throat, the DMX song, it goes like:
"
Uhh!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
Come on, uhh, uhhh huhhh
But they don't hear me though
Uhh, but they don't hear me though,
uhh, but they don't but they don't..
I got blood on my hands and there's no remorse
I got blood on my dick cuz I f**ked a corpse
I'm a nasty nigga when u pass me nigga look me in my eyes
..."

that was in the video link from my badass fight thread I think, those words sound familiar but i dont think I heard any of that song outside the video.

Anyway im going to put in my 2cents real quick.

A lot of rap is diverse. Look at tupac shakur, eminem, even 50 cent and you'll see thats a few rappers that go beyond the stereotype. Granted a majority of the rappers today are just getting record deals off their 'boy' and then blowin up..Well I'm going to say this now, there were always be stereotypes for any type of music, be it country, rock, rap, or even classical. You don't have to like the type of music but stereotyping rap is about as narrow minded as it gets. The lyrics from alot of rappers and their songs are obscene beyond reason, but so are a lot of todays punk groups etc.

Ludacris, Eminem, 2pac, 50 cent, and nas are just a FEW rappers that are more lyrically talented then MOST musicians today, of ANY genre. Nas for example tells stories in many of his songs, hell one of them is even in reverse(starts from the end of the story works his way to the beginning) and does so in such detail that it paints the story in your head, I'd say that is pretty powerful lyrics, and beyond the 400 word vocabulary.

You're right about the NBA players. However, its not every over-paid, entertainment-based group that has this problem. Its only the ones that come from very poor backgrounds and aren't fully educated in the world of finance.

I dont listen to rap anymore. I love country music, its generally christian, it has a huge patriotic fan base, it talks about real life issues, and there is almost no cussing. I am someone who is open to anything good however, so I usually listen to all types of music.

Or course every music genre has its stereotypes. But some rap music just scares and infuriates me. The violence is unbelievable.

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for artistic freedom and non-censorship. But you have to wonder what is wrong with a society where its members actually write these lyrics and actually buy these albums.

I used to listen to rap religiously, untill about 3 or 4 years ago. I just couldn't take it anymore. Once you get past 2pac, biggie, nas, eminem, fitty, outkast, and the occasional jay-z, you've heard all the good in rap music. The rest is either the crap which you hear on the radio now, or is more r&b or hip hop ish. There are some great rap/hip hop groups out there though, like The Roots, etc.
