hey mike17 , a 4.7 doesn't really help u at tackel cause as the other guy pointed out u really dont have newhere to run that far , but what does help any line-men is a quick burst off the line , i run a 4.4 in the 40 however that doesn't mean i'm a quick de off the line , i'm actually terrible off the line but i build up speed as i go along , so what line-men need is a quick burst as well as a good judgement of the snap count

if you run a 4.4 (and you most likely don't), you have a hell of a burst off the line. the 40 yd dash is all about explosiveness. better 40 time = more quickness = better start off the line.

Hey im a sophomore 5'5 135 pounds I ran a 4.72 a couple days ago. I wanna know what you ppl will think I can run my senior year or next year thx. This is all hand clocked BTW. Dunno if a machine would give a different outcome.

hye mike like i said b4 i run a 4.4 i can post my tryout results if u would like , but like i said i dont exactly have the best burst off the line , my finish is stronger than my start , not all 40 yard dashes have to do with a great start , u can have a good or average start and then finish strong much like i do

u'll probably run about a 4.7 flat on a machine hand clocks are always a lil off and usually to ur disadvantage cause usually the runner starts bout a spilt second after the clock , if u develope a good bit more u should run bout a 4.4 or 4.5 but this all depends on whether u run with stride or power , along with how well u develope , like whether u become tall and thin , or gain weight / muscle and only grow an inch or two

Is that true? Machines are always going to give your time a better time? Im not going to get very tall I am a short kid I run with tonsa steps in short amounts of time. Last year I weighed 122 so from there to now thats a 13 pound gain. Can I continue to gain like that every year?

of course you can keep gaining weight...depending on your age and activity level. you also have to watch what u eat. get used to eating a little bit more(eat more healthy food and more protein) and make sure that you are also lifting weights, to get those legs and that upper body stronger and more powerful, making you a faster runner

yeah monkey is right with the way u are tellin me ur runnin , u run wit power , therefore u should welcome the weight gain , but make sure it is muscle wieght by stayin in shape this will help u get faster , in ur case bein u run with power muscle weight equals speed not lighter weight equals speed

Ran a 4.4 in my freshman year of college...Ran track in HS and played soccer...my 40 time was awesome because of an explosive start...but top speed I was not the fastest on the team...the 40 is overrated but it is a great tool to detect explosiveness and quickness which is needed in football....

I was the best 40 on the team, yet probably 3rd in the 100m...so it is just one aspect of the game....and yes it has become overrated....I only weighed 155 when I was pulling those times...so by no means was I ready to line up against a LB...

yeah

well i dont think a 4.85 is very bad...im a freshman tailback at my HS and started varsity this year...but then again i run a 4.65...im only about 175 pounds though...i agree that 40's are definatly under rated...speed kills and you will never hear a coach say a player is too fast...but just keep workin hard n im sure ull get faster....one thing i wanna know is how to gain weight n keep my speed

late

I don't care how fast the back is if the line's weak. The 40's not underrated on the whole, but if I was a rb I sure as hell would want linemen who were great 20 yards or less and really explosive blocking for me than 180 pound guys who can run quickly.

Anything on a stopwatch is reachable, but not very credible. You must be timed on a electrical timing system for it to be accurate. A 4.4 on those are very rare. That's a D1 time.

4.8 is a very good HS time. A 190 freshman is also very good. A D1 coach will like 6' 215+ with a sub-4.8. Your game will turn the most heads, though. NFL draftees run 4.6-4.8 at 230 lbs usually. Rarely you have an athlete running less at linbacker. Just make plays.
