40 yard dash times

definitely the most overrated stat in football is the 40 yard dash. All anyone cares about is how fast you are on a track, but i can garuntee someone like ray lewis, brian urlacher, or any hard hitting linebacker would crush michael johnson (ran 25 mph once, that has to be a sub 4 second forty, maybe 3.9) on a football feild. Anyway, since the 40 yard dash is so important i wanna know what good times are. I play middle linebacker for my HS, im a frosh and i run a 4.85. Im 6-0 190 pounds. I figure with my natural growth and lifting i should get down to a 4.7-4.68 in the forty, i was wondering if these are good, asnd if not, where i should be as a senior to get some college recruitors and a chance at D1 ball.

If you can get it 4.5 or under......that would up your stock significantly. At your height/weight that time is very possible.

It's impossible to run a sub 4.0 40. So there's no way Michael Johnson ran that. I believe a study was done on a sprinter who was on steroids and ran a 9.73 100 meters which was the world record, but later wiped away after his piss was dirty. Anyways, the world record in the 100 only came out to be 4.28 after 40 yards. If he ran a 4.28 while taking illegal supplements and breaking a world record there's no way anyone runs a sub 4.0 40.

Right now a 4.85 isn't bad but it's kinda slow for someone who is 190. Obviously your body will develop as you go through high school, I think an ideal weight for a HS LB is around 210 and if you get to a 4.7 in the 40 and make plays on the field you will be noticed by college recruiters.

A 4.4 40 yard dash time is 18.6 MPH. However, you have to consider that an average, because you don't just start out running 18.6MPH. You have to accelerate up to that speed. 25MPH might be close to a 4.0 40, but, he would have to accelerate to that speed, thus he probably can run maybe a 4.2.

I can run 20MPH. I would gather that I can probably run between a 4.4-4.6 40 from that, but it all just depends. One day you can go out and run a 4.7 40, and the next day you can run a 4.5 40. It just depends on the track you are being tested on, and your condition at the time, i.e., rested, tired, etc.

I agree, it probably is an overrated stat. The best stat in football, in my opinion, is smarts and decision making. You can run as fast as you want to, but run the wrong route, or make a wrong decision, and what is the point?

JDIZZ ---> Go buy, or build a cheap sled, or just something that you can tie yourself to, and sprint with. Then buy a 50lb bag of sand, or something, and place it on the sled. Go to a field somewhere, or a track, and do sprints with it. That wil definately build your speed!

40-yard dash

JD,

You are doing just fine. In fact, you are quite big for a frosh. If you are already in the mid 4.8 region you should be able to get somewhere near 4.6 or so in a couple of years.

The "new breed" backers like Urlacher and Zach Thomas combine quickness and toughness. Notice, I didn't say just speed. Don't get those two confused. If you can be functionally fast and make plays, you will have a chance at D1 or D1-AA.

If you want some more tips you can check out my guide at

Not only is a 4.85 good for a 6'0 190lb freshmen, its great.

For a college D1 chance, you would want to put some muscle mass on (aim for 215-230 range), get your 40 (which is already very good) down to the 4.6-4.7 range, get your football skills down, and just start making plays. Get yourself noticed from the get-go as a freshmen, get some nice stats, and just keep working hard in the weight room and out at the track.

"Right now a 4.85 isn't bad but it's kinda slow for someone who is 190" = bull

if those are your real #s then freaking great for u man, ur fast. I'm a sophmore i am 6'2 165-ish lbs and i only run a 4.88, and i am fast for a free safety, atleast in the area...maybe newyorkers are just slow or something.

i just started doing this and i know someone who runs a 4.3 that was at 4.9 and made the change in less than 4 months. find a very steep sandy hill and sprint up it multiple times a day. @ a park near me i found a hill that i close to a 65 degree slant and maybe 40 meters tall, i sprint up it about 20 days a day at full speed(well, 100%, after like 8 or so full speed would make me run a 6 second 40) but i am notising a difference in the quickness of my strides.
