sup guys.... I am new to these forums and have been working out for a few months. I started boxing 2 months in my basement and love the cardio and toning it gives me. Does anyone else in here box for cardio? If so what techniques do you use? Any special exercises that you do to increase the intensity or focus on something other than your arms? I love boxing.... much more fun for me than jogging all the time (even though i still jog twice a week). Just need something to spice it up a bit.

I'm not a boxer, but the boxers I know have legs that are strong as hell. Isn't alot of boxing footwork anyway? I don't really understand why you need to shift your focus.
There is an interesting interview in this month's issue (sept) of Muscle Media with Tim Hallmark (the trainer for Evander Holyfield). You may want to take a peek at it.

I boxed a lifting buddy in high school once. He was 180 lbs, I was 135. He could land some solid punches! Held my own, but man, was I his punching bag. Woke up the next morning and blew my nose and all that came out was blood. That was it for me...never again! lol Do you plan on boxing others or just using it for cardio?

I used to kickbox competetively....my vanity is pretty much the main reason I gave it up! It was the best workouts I had, I was in the best shape of my life, but valued my facial features and teeth too much!
Im actually considering getting back into it actually. I'll just have to get SO DARN GOOD that I dont have to worry about marring my looks cuz noone will touch me lol!
Hi River. My husband and I looooove marcial arts. And we love boxing too. Not that I am good at it. lol but It is so much fun. What do you do for your training? Do you take classes?
I knew someone that boxed as a kid and he gave me tons of tips. Helped correct my form and what not and told me to keep my feet moving. I am using it as primarily cardio but its toning up everything pretty well. I have only been working out with it for about 3 months and i am overweight and outta shape. I have worked up to 30 minutes of intense punching bag cardio with a 1 minute break every ten minutes.... more or less like a real boxer except my rounds are 10 minutes long instead of 3 minutes. I usually do some assorted ab exercises and small stretches beforehand and afterwards i usually do a few free weight exercises. Bicep curl, triceps, and some shoulder stuff. It works for me!
Cooool Keep up the great work, Rivers
I can not wait to go back to classes and practice with my husband again. We are learning JKD and Kali. they are both great. We learned some boxing from JKD. It is a lot of fun. For me, foot work is the biggest challenge. But I personally think that is one of the most important thing to learn....
Many ways to go about it. I mix it up all the time from starting out with weights then move to boxing, and then the next time it will be boxing then the weights. Thta's how I train myself and my people and it works. I train people that play many sport from softball to football and every thing I teach them I relate to boxing and the moves used in boxing. In baseball/softball you use a lot of your torso to swing & hit the ball, same goes for someone throwing a right to the body. Here you just used your torso the same way. Instead of just running for a few miles, do some hard sprints for a good mile or so. Do some swimming sprint laps or even intervals. The way I look at it is that anything that can improve my sport I will give it a try. Remember, "STAY READY & YOU WON'T HAVE TO GET READY"! You guys have my e-mail if you need any help or tips.
