boxing to gain mass

hey i lift 4 days a week and i have no problem getting good results in the gym. but i dont do cardio b/c im trying to gain weight right now. i eat every 3 hours and take protein and eat healthy. but i recently got interested in boxing and i have looked at some heavy bags and speed bags. but i know how much of a workout hitting a bag can be and i dont want to do anything to mess up me gaining weight since it is going so well right now. my main goal to box right now would be to be able to hit harder (for fights or whatever the reason ) but later when im cutting weight maybe do some cardio on it. would this be a good idea to get a heavey bag and hit it to be able to hit harder or even make my arms stronger and maybe bigger. if so what kind of hitting excersizes should i do and how often. i was told that since i lift heavy i shouldnt box heavy b/c it would overtrain. i do not know what to do so any advice will help. thanks

Hi There,

I think your friend could be right and there may be a possibility of overtraining if your looking to hit the heavy bag.

Something else to bear in mind is that a workout on a heavy bag can call for some level of technique and just hammering away at the bag can lead to injuries quite quickly, often impact injuries and strains.

Hitting the bag could easily lead to good explosive strength but there is a level of cardio involved. in addition you do tend to find a "boxers body" look from boxing specific training, not sure if that may be something you are looking for?

You are not going to get bigger from boxing, boxing is an exteme cardiovascualr workout and is mainly an endurance type workout...the weight training will get you big as long as you eat enough, but all the boxing will help you lean out....it will need to have a good balance if you want to get big, and get lean at the same time...

yeah, you can get big while doing boxing. The boxing won't make you big though. Eating enough to support the boxing and the weight training will.

Lifting + boxing + eating enough = getting big while staying lean AND being in very good condition.

And this applies to any cardio, not just boxing!

Make sure you get some hand wraps and some bag gloves. The wraps will give your wrists some extra support if you don't hit the bag correctly which can really mess up your wrists. If you are just starting out even if you're only going to be working the heavy bag I would suggest getting some basic instruction from a pro there is a lot of technique involved with punching.

boxing isn't a technique like martial arts though so i can't give you punching advice.. but i can tell you that don't clench your fist until the half a second or so of impact it will increase your power by quite an amount and you'll notice in boxing they always drive with their hips... that is like martial arts... you get alot more balance and power.

Boxing is very high cardio and will not increase muscle mass. I train in Mix Martial Arts and it's a killer. As for hitting the heavy bag, do not use bag gloves. Buy yourself a pair of actuall boxing gloves between 14oz-16oz and some hand wraps. You can get hand gell wraps and everything else you would need from http://www.titleboxing.com/

Also, i highly recomend Bas Rutten's Mixed Martial Arts Workout. It consists of several Cds and a DVD and it has a bunch of different heavy bag workouts with 2 and 3 minute rounds. One of the best workouts youll every have. You can get them here: https://www.basrutten.tv/index.php?p...shop&Itemid=65
