I'd say start off with the kickboxing, and then when you have good fundemental stand up skills, go to the ground with BJJ.

with those goals, I'd say kickboxing. honestly, the only reason to learn BJJ other than love of grappling is to compete in BJJ or MMA. While it can do damage to one guy, its relatively useless in a fight involving more than one person.

Personally I found kickboxing better for shredding weight while BJJ was great for endurance and real functional strength. The constant pushing, pulling, and scrambling is exhausting.

boxing or kickboxing.

I've dabbled in many arts over the years, taking what was useful to me from each of them and keeping it as my own. My base was shotokan karate then san soo kung fu. Regular boxing, kickboxing, ju-jitsu... the list goes on.

As much as I love ju-jitsu and respect the great fighters in this (and in reality, it also includes stand up fighting in it's purest form, not just ground wrestling skills) for your stated goals, simply do kickboxing.

You just want to be able to handle yourself in a fight, look into one of the bastardized abbreviated styles (I won't call them arts) that grew from san soo. Namely SCARS and SAFTA (think peterson and abbot). Learn this and you will be hell on wheels in a street fight. But to truly be a fighter (and meet your other goals), learn kickboxing, give it your all, then add what you need from the other arts as you progress.

You've made a good choice. Enjoy your training.
