They do.

I can only help them get fit. I cannot teach them to cheer. Cheer camp will make them better.

D and RJ are doing that and will be taking them to camp this year. Scary, a bunch of 11-15 year olds going off being watched by a couple of 18 year olds...

Maybe I will go after all.

They do think I'm very old. Sometimes they think I'm scary. Perveted? Nope, won't even give any of them a ride home after practice.

The one coach and the one kid that I have anything to do with away from practice are both my daughters. Did I mention that my oldest daughter is helping coach now? She was quite good and their cheering is improving drastically with her help.

How about something sport specific like a dumbell snatch for your ground-based crew?

That's a good idea ... or maybe throwing sandbags for height?

Dumbell snatch, thats a thought, but they'd have to do it two handed. In middle school, the lifts for stunts are done with both hands. But what the heck, they are doing high school cheers because the two girls teaching most of the cheers just graduated (yaay, my oldest daughter decided to help out too). so maybe we can get by with doing the same stunts?

I was going to get a guy I know that used to be on the US olympic team to show them how to do the one from the ground like a deadlift into a front squat with a front standing MP. No clue what it's called, but it looks like a similar movement. Dumbells might be a better idea though.

That they do. And they are very proud of themselves. And the behavioral concerns I had at first...all solved. One gets out of line, we all take a lap. This is the best behaved, hardest working group of kids I've ever met.

That is an old Army Drill Sergeant trick that was constantly used in basic training to rope in a bunch of wild young men and turn them into soldiers. It worked really well.

It has made them into a coheisve team. Each one really wanting to do her part. And all working together. And me, the elderly one...really wanting them to do well. Remember I said "WE" all take a lap. I do everything that I ask them to do.Now they are applying that same work ethic to everything and the cheers are really coming along so well. The high kicks are great, but the jumping splits aren't there yet. And the Jump Herkie, it's got a long ways to go.

Well, I have to admit I've never tried cheerleading, but I imagine it's not something you learn overnight. They're working hard; they'll get it eventually.
