middle aged man wants to jump

i used to play basketball when i was in my early 20's. i'm 6'3, and i was able to dunk the ball back then. now i'm 36 and few years ago i started to play ball again, and i can hardly touch the rim now. is it possible for a man of my age to dunk the ball again? how should i start to practice?
thanks, anssi from finland

Work those legs - you need explosive strength. I would focus on the squats, lunges, deadlifts and calf raises.

This goes with the proper diet, of course.

Welcome, anssi from finland.

You could also add jump squats with dumbbells or a trap bar. Very good for adding explosive strength, but you need to watch your landings as that is the time you will be most vulnerable to injury.

If doing jump squats, consider jumping up to a stepped surface (one that can provide adequate stability, of course). That way, you'll save your joints from the heavier than normal (damaging) impact. The height of the target surface will be determined by your 1) your leg strength, and 2) the additional weight that you're attempting to move.

Good input cursor. Just make sure the stepped surface is rock solid.

I'm 50 years old - a middle-age man. You are a young man.

cursor: I've been thinking about jumping to a step. How much would the forward motion of the weights (inertia?) be prone to causing injury compared to the straight up and down motion of a simple jump? Almost seems like a wash of one over the other to me.

Could be.

Personally, I wouldn't carry enough weight to make the forward/horiz portion of the jump risky. Jump like a cat does to a window sill or the top of a fence ... virtually elimintating the vertical impact of the weight on the hips, ankles, and knees. If the weight that you're using is too easy, then increase the weight until challenging ... but still safe.
