OC-1 or dragon boat racing anyone?

If anyone here does OC-1 or competitive dragon boat racing, I'd be curious to know how you train. Of course, I suspect I will get more "What's OC-1?" reactions than actual replies, but I thought I'd throw this out there anyways.

And if anyone knows what I'm talking about, how do you balance lifting heavy and on-water practices without over doing it?

That might give you an idea. Click OC1 Stingray. Of course, the lake water here in TO isn't as pretty.

Ohhhh, I could go for that. It's looks kinda like one of those canoe-like boats that the natives ride in in the south Pacific. I love water sports. I usually go surfing or kayaking but that looks a lot faster than a kayak. I'll have to look. I'm sure they have those somewhere in California.

It is faster. And tippier. But a lot of fun.

I did dragon boat races on the fox river in illinois for a couple years. Didn't really train specifically for it. Just need good arm and back strenght.

Mmm... depends which boat you buy. Average between $3000-$4000.

Karl, my team is pretty hard core (5:30am practices on the water ) so I'm looking to supplement paddling technique with other training. I just find it very hard to balance water practices with lifting heavy.

Holy crap. I could almost buy a ski boat for that! Do they rent 'em? lol

Why don't you try a periodized workout program that works around your water work?

Wasn't that hardcore about it. Funny thing is the Power House Gym sponsored 2 teams, they never practiced and took 1st and 2nd out of 12 teams

Yeah, the good ones aren't cheap! Some people rent, yes. Periodization... hmmm... any suggestions if I'm training Mon-Wed-Fri from Jan through Sept? I really feel as if I'm missing out at the gym because of this training.
