Run, run, run.
Its really not much more than pushing yourself a little bit harder on a regular basis. When you're done with your first mile at 7:30, keep running for a bit farther at that pace. If you can, slightly increase your pace. Simply increasing your pace to cut 10 seconds off your run eventually adds up.

Try to shave off 5 seconds or so each time out. It will take a while, but by moving slowly you decrease the risk of injury. I'd also recommend interval training and sprinting at least one a week. Then mix in some longer runs. Some people swear by plyometrics, which build explosive strength. Do a search for more info.
Run miles whenever you can and track your progress.

The best way to increase the mile time is by running consistently (3-4 times a week). You MUST build a base and get your legs used to running, otherwise you will have tons of aches and pains and running will be no fun. I did this last summer when I started back up, It wasnt fun. I was already in ok shape too, as i used to run x-country and track. To build this base I would recommend running longer distances at a slower pace for a few weeks. Then as others stated earlier, start picking up the pace. You can also do fartleks, where you alternate you running speed. For instance, a good start may be to run 3 minutes normal pace (7:30), then run one minute faster pace (6:30-7 min). Do this series for 30-40 mins and you will notice a difference soon. There are lots of running workouts and tricks to help you get that time down...this was just one. Good luck and hope this helps.

Well, when I want to cover a mile in 6 minutes instead of 7:30, I just speed up from 8 mph to 10mph, which is easy to do because I just press the accelerator down a little bit more and try not to hit the break so much....
Always works for me :

dude, try running cross country. Its a good way to build up your endurance. Running two or three miles a day will build up your leg muscles and increase your lung capacity. then when you have to run a mile, just pick up the pace and run.
