am I resting too much?

So im taking a weight training class at my college cuz its a lot cheaper than joining a gym. Unfortunately ive made a lot of friends in this class and I have a problem socializing

Im 167 lbs and this week I was repping 250 on squat. Problem is that between sets id wait like 10 minutes to help spot my friend and we'd start up a convo.

Normally I do 2 sets of 6 but I felt bad for resting so much so I threw in another set and ended up doing 3 sets of 6.

I was hoping the 3rd set would somewhat compensate for the time I spent talking between sets(normally I cant do a 3rd set w/o lowering the weight but I think since I rested so much I was able to)

Currently I am bulking and been making pretty steady gains every week and give my muscle groups 7 days rest period between sets.

My question is - how detrimental is 10 minutes rest between sets? Should I not worry about it? or is that a big problem? I work pretty hard on my diet/workout schedule so Id hate to do damage to my bulking cycle because of talking.

also , I am lifting extremely heavy(6 reps is the max I can do) and until failure.

Im just curious if this will significantly hinder my gains for this week.

definatly too much unless primary goal is strength gains and you are really failing yourself each set. ATP is 99.5% replenished after 3 minutes

With the strength gains will come size gains, unless you are trying to get in a cardio workout with your weight training the rests should be fine.

Yes but one can be favored the biggest are never the strongest and vice versa HST is proof of this training for mass over strength. ATP replensihes in about 3 mins 10 mins is ridiculous for all sets so he can have a chat

well to clarify, I AM lifting for strength first and size 2nd.

I just want to be strong, looking good is a nice bonus that comes along with it.

I like the way you put that.

10 minutes rest in between sets is not unheard of but I'd try to keep it a little closer to 5 minutes. I doubt you'll find that much difference in the numbers you can put and the lesser rest time will do good for your conditioning.

The strength gurus have it right, that's why they are waaaay stronger than me with my short rests. 3-5 minutes rest is probably enough for strength gains. I've seen some really strong people in the past though rest over 10 minutes before though. The idea is to rest until you are recovered enough to get going again. But not so long that you are wasting your time.

That kind of depends on how you train. If you are training with maximal weights for reps, you have to rest a few minutes between sets. If using lighter weights than your maximum, you can rest less.

With periods of 10 minutes between sets, the amount of time you're working out for is really extended. Not only that, but you can easily loose focus and allow your muscles to cool down.

Therefore, remember to keep things really intensive. The more you do so, the quicker your session will be over and the longer your body will have to repair itself before the next workout.

It does take some effort, but try and get your training partner to concentrate on what theyre doing aswell, and tell them about the benefits of keeping rest periods around the 3 minute mark.
