yeah - i still don't know what an " arnold press" is.
okay, i went and looked it up - http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/...noldPress.html - it does, indeed, look very effective.
painful as hell, but effective. i might try a few sets of those for rotator cuffs.

Standing barbell press is my favorite. It works the shoulders effectively, and you can really pack on the weight to really pound them.

Hmmm, Arnold Press - that's an interesting one. Kind of like the DB shoulder press but with more ROM. May give those a try next shoulder day.

What does the Arnold press do that a regular barbell press doesn't do? I'm not trying to be a smartass; I'm honestly curious.

really a seated press of any kind is not a military press, do a history check and the original militray press was called this because the lifter had to keep his feet together like he was standing in "attention" hence the name "military press" the rules got relaxed but you still gotta stand with it.
for those writing journals if your doing it seated then write seated front presses or even if you wrote seated military press I still know what your talking about, but it's really not a "military press" no big deal really as long as you stated that your seated.
as for a standing bench press, again do a history check and you'll see that right before the "press" was dropped in the 70's (I think) lifters were leaning so far back that it was getting damn close to a moderen day powerlifting bench set, only without a bench, pretty damn wild.

I used to do my dumbell presses with palms facing forward through the entire movement. Then I realized this was pretty much the same as doing seated barbell press so I changed to doing them where I rotated palms towards my head and bringing the weights to my shoulders. The arnold press includes more rotation and looks like since the weights are coming down to the chest with more range of motion it is going to work the delts even more fully. And arnold has some pretty nice delts - or at least he used to have.
I'm giving them a try tomorrow morning in my shoulder workout - I'll post how I feel about them after that.

If the Arnold presses are supposed to be so great, why don't more people do them? Out of curiousity, do any of the top lifters in the world use them? Like Coleman, or Cutler, or even Todd for that matter?
Is it because you can't use as much weight as a standard shoulder press, so that scares people away?
Firehawk-would a powerlifter ever use them as an accessory exercise?

Don't know - i'll have an answer for you tomorrow - if someone with experience doesn't have an answer for your today.
It might be kind of like why no one deadlifts. Because it's hard.

I did "Arnold presses" when I first started, I could care less about them now.
There's also something I read about "Scott's" presses, this was a dumbell press made by Vince Gironda to bring up Larry Scott's shoulders this was before Arnold's self named dumbell press, remember if these guys actually did this stuff it was later in their career most likely, I'd say most on this forum shouldn't get too obsessed about them.

Arnold presses are a pretty good, effective exercise. I don't do them all the time, but it's a good thing to have as a variation. It's actually pretty hard to do. Just because it has Arnold's name on it is no reason to be prejudiced against it.

luke...thanks for the history lesson I've been making the mistake of calling my seated shoulder presses military presses. Is overhead press a better name? I assume it's a more general term as opposted to MP.
