It depends on how your body reacts. I would do a mix of HIIT and longer lower intensity runs/biking and make sure you are properly fueled to minimize any muscle loss.

Wow, I've never even considered that. That would be pretty damn tough. Even fully loaded and freshly fed when I do HIIT as in Max Ot style cardio...I can barely make the 16 minutes it prescribes. Might work though but it would be pretty hard to manage.

I think though that the theory behind HIIT is a metabolic boost that lasts you all day instead of direct fat burning. So personally, I'd feed it.

I regularly perform an early-morning HIIT running workout on the treadmill and normally only eat an orange or other piece of fruit prior. I find that early-morning HIIT gives me boundless energy for the remainder of my day.

It can play a significant role in contributing to an elevated metabolism long after the workout is done, but ultimately it is the quality and quantity of food you stuff in your mouth the remainder of the day that will have more of an impact on your fat-reduction goals.

Ditto. The combination will help you maximize muscle recruitment too. More fibers moving, more calories burned.
