Dips vs "wide-grip" dips

How wide of a grip are we talking about?

When i do wide grip dips i have both hands in line with my elbows, pretty much exactly the same width as you bench. These mainly target the chest as where normal dips target triceps.

I only do dips with a grap that's about shoulder width apart. Doing it too wide seems like it would be a bad idea.

i agree with chain. my gym has angled bars so the farther you go out, the more spread apart they are... i find that going out too far and my collar bones start killing, maybe they are not strong enough. i have to find the right place to feel it on my chest just right, or triceps (but i find that hitting a certain part has more to do with the angle your body is in, rather than how far your arms are apart). for example, to hit triceps i stay straight up and down as possible but to hit chest i angle forward a little bit.

You're right; nothing to do with grip change.

Actually, I don't see the point behind a wide grip dip. Seems like it would place too much stress on the shoulders.

i think its possible the angle your situated in, as someone said above. I do wide grip dips and they feel really good on the entire chest, so just move around a bit and see what works for you

Agree with above. Dips aren't an isolation exercise, wide grip = bad idea. If you just use the most natural grip that enables you to lift the most weight you'll have found the right grip. Same goes for chins.

wide grip is a bad idea. In my opinion is a very easy way to hurt your shoulders. I just like to do not to close but not to wide, medium grip, go real heavy for 6 reps and your good to go!

Wide grip kills my shoulders. I agree with whomever it was who said that to hit the chest you lean forward a bit.

Yep, adding my two cents in. Agreed.

No wide grip, just adjust your angle.

Wide grips and going too low are two great ways to bust a clavicle or tear muscle.
