Id consider myself an ectomorph, starting off at a weight 120lbs, 5'11 height
tp put in in proper context thats a bmi of 16.8. I challenge soemone to beat that.
4% bodyfat and prob 4% muscle. Unfortunatly i have no photos as i would not allow them being so ashamed of it.
I am now 187lbs and well still skinny but now theres an awful lot skinnier than me!

Todd I always hear how you say you were skinny before but thought your idea of skinny might be different to mine. However after seeing them legs cant believe they were even able to support your upper body.

ectomorphs unite! lol

Glad to see that even though our metabolism is super fast that some results can still come out of it all.. I'm 5'8'' and only 140-142, with the skinniest chicken legs in the world! But they're getting worked on!

I have a question for all ectos, is it just me, or does muscle not come on quite as fast as it would a meso or endo? My lifting buddy is an endo and he has the mass, but with practically half the weight I use to lift.. Frustration and vehemency are the only two words I can come out with!

That can be true, in my first year I only gained 3kg =/ then 2nd year 17kg and in the last year and a half 10kg.

Our bodies can be wierd, but the advantage is that you could eat messy food but still with protein from time to time, and not put on the fat, in which the endo's or meso's would easily put on. It's a trade-off

Exactly, and just to add.... you only have what your parents have given you to work with when it comes to natural metabolism and genetics, but at the same time, you can capitolize on it all by learning what is needed for your body in order to make gains. In "our" situation, being ectomorphs, we simply need to eat a lot of clean nutrient dense foods, and make sure we eat on time, without missing ANY meals. I personally know that for me, that if I miss ANY meals at all, I can feel (and see) my body taking a loss.

The advantage of being ecto tho, is that we can stay lean even while eating tons of food....amounts that would make most endos or mesos look like a blown up marshmellow in the proccess. We can stay lean while adding on muscle mass, and that my friends is something to be proud of. Being able to see abs year round is not so bad, either!

Being ecto allows us to see the quality muscle being added on while we gain. And then, when it comes to wanting to lean out more, it isn't as hard as it would be for most endos or mesos.

Personally, I love being ecto, and feel blessed to have a super fast metabolism.

Also I think since us ectos has longer limbs in the end when we've made our gains, our muscles look more prominent and stand out more.

not to mention that in my opinion girls tend to like thin guys who add on muscle as opposed to thick blocky looking guys. maybe im wrong as i can't speak for women but thats how it would seem.

Well, that's what my woman likes.

Count me in the ecto club - 5-11 and 164. Bulking up to 185 last summer was the hardest thing I ever did. When I stopped eating like a freaking horse I dropped back down into the 170s in a matter of weeks.

I've since settled for being as strong as I can, pound for pound.

I tend to ignore genetics. I'm probably an ecto since I've always been thin, burn calories like crazy, have long limbs, etc... But who cares? All I consider when eating is the number of calories I know I need to grow. All I consider when training is putting intensity through the roof. I fear too many people hide behind genetics and don't put in the necessary time to see there potential.

Klinger, I have the same exact problem with the disappearing weight gain. This year, I have to eat like crazy and watch the cardio just to stay in the 180s (I'll probably be high 170s by June). The year before it was staying in the 170s. Hopefully next year I'll be working hard to stay in the 190s. As Denzel said in "Training Day", "This sh1t's chess, it ain't checkers."

i have a proper diet, and use hard grainer tricks and tips , I have a solid work out set up and its all compound, I work out in a group so i never leave with out being covered in sweat. I do a 4 day split. mon-tues - thurs fri. and it rotates every 3 months to six.
I take hydrochloric creatine ( cycled everuy two months) and multi vitas twice a day, and recently just started taking black powder on a friends sugestion. 1 scoop before work outs.

First off, I will say that if you are not gaining lean muscle weight, then there are only a handful of reasons as to why you aren't..and here they are.

1) You are not eating enough to support your efforts in the gym.

2) You are not properly stimulating your muscle groups to force them to grow. (perhaps doing too many isolation exercises and not enough compound exercises)..or your intensity/concentration level is not sufficient enough to stimulate new gains.

3) You are doing too much!! You could be doing too many sets and overall volume per workout session and in which case, you wil not gain as expected. More is not always better in bodybuilding. Make sure you are in and out of the gym within 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 mins MAXIMUM!

4) You are not getting enough sleep/rest per night.

5) You are doing too much activity outside of weight training, which in turn is using up too many calories that are needed to grow new muscle.

6) You are not doing ALL of the above things (eating enough, resting enough, not stimulating your muscles enough, etc) on a consistent regular basis.

Now, when it comes to supplements, they will only AID you in your efforts, they won't make or break you, and even at that..99% of the supplements on the market are complete crap that do absolutely nothing at all except drain you wallet.

There are currently only TWO supplements that I feel deserve to be added to everyone's diet for aiding results. These two are whey protein and creatine monohydrate, because they actually do work, and give noticeable results when taken consistently.

As far as rep ranges go, it all depends on what your goal is. If it's to gain solely strength, then a rep range of 1-3 would be ideal on most basic lifts. If your goal is to gain strictly muscle size and not much effort on the strength part, then reps from 6-10 or even 12 would be ideal. If you are looking for a good mixture of both size and strength, then a rep range of 4-6 would be ideal.

Now, don't forget that NOTHING is set in stone when it comes to bodybuilding and figuring out what YOUR body responds best to. Everyone is so different, and while some people may grow great using a rep range of 4-6 mostly, others will find that this rep range does hardly anything for them, and that a higher rep range of say 6-10 is ideal for them. This is where you must use "trial and error" and give different rep ranges a thorough try before trying something different and getting frustrated.

Hope this helps you some!
