If you start doing like the HST like you were originally with 12 different exercises, then I would do only 1 set each... but I think your good Gway, you just need to focus on consistency right now more than anything. remember theres no wrong way to train, other than with no consistency!
I'm just trying to help him avoid over training, if he does this split, just for chest
M - 4sets
W-4sets
F- 4sets

I would consider 12 sets alot if I was only training chest once a week, not to mention all the other work he is doing in that same time frame. Like I said unless he has the Wolverines recovery ability he is going to burn out quick.

More is not always better in the weight training game, you only need to do enough to stimulate growth. As Lee Haney used to say the oblective is the stimulate not inihilate
