Being sore is normal if you've been lifting for 50 years, let alone just a few.

Yeah for sure mate, especially if you say that 'in the past month I have been pushing really hard.' Sounds like your pushing your body to limits it hasn't been used to for some time, and it is trying to adapt and improve to cope with this stress. The ole' saying if you dont use it, you'll lose it, is so true in every respect to our bodies.

I have been lifting for about 10 years and I could hardly sit on the dunny this morning after a good leg workout 2 days ago. I thought to myself, that'll teach me for taking it too easy lately!

on the subject of soreness, do you think this is a good way to determine if you're pushing it hard enough? My legs get sore to the point of barely being able to walk everytime, but don't seem to grow much or get much stronger?

Nope, muscle soreness is not necessarily a direct link to whether you're going to get major growth or strength gain from a previous workout. You can be sore as hell, but if you don't eat right, eat often enough, get enough sleep, etc., then you won't gain any size or strength.
