Heavy bag?

What do you guys think about the heavy bag as a form of cardio? I think I read somewhere that you can burn up to 500-700 cal per hour using this. Would this help define you arm/chest/back?

P.S. I posted a msg about uneven chest and dumbbells were right on the money. Thnaks to everyone

I absolutely love it as a cardio tool. I can easily spike my heart rate up to 180 on it, and I find it very useful for interval training (particularly on days where I don't feel up to doing my usual daily hike). I don't think it'd do jack for hypertrophy, though. That's what weights are for.

If you're working the bag right your shoulders and abs, and eventually arms will get worked pretty well. I'd say it's an excellent form of cardio, more useful in real life than the elliptical or bike.

When you talk about heavy bag cadio, you are just talking about punching and kicking it right? Sounds like a blast, beat the **** out of a bag for a while and I can see that being great exercise.

It's really really tiring. In this mixed martial arts class I take we do bag work every now and then and it drains me every time.

I love hitting a heavy bag...try to go with something over 100 lbs and set a time limit. Its also a great exercise for strengthening your wrists and forearms and its a great stress reliever! Enjoy

I use the bag a lot and it tires me quicker than any cardio machine in the gym.

I prefer concrete columns! LOL Heavy bags are a great way to get an upper AND lower body workout if done correctly. Footwork/Arm movement, what a better way to do cardio!

If you do this, PLEASE use wrist wraps and bag gloves! You will wreck your hands and wrists otherwise. I wrap up every time, and I do bag work at least once a week.

I didn't use bag gloves just two times, and now I have 3 scars on my knuckles. The worst part is, they tend to bleed now even with proper gloves.

Same here man. Always looks like I've been in a fight with someone.
