Is deadlift for lower back or for the legs?

I have always believed that deads are for the lower back, but recently, someone told me that deads are for the legs?

so... i am confused now...

emphasis on the lower back, but it's also a total body exercise.

I find it hits my legs quite hard as well. I do it on the leg day...

no question - it can be done on leg or back day, depending if you're doing the regular or stiff-legged variant.

SLDL = Leg day
Dead lift = back day

I do my conventional deadlifts on back day and stiff-legged ones as do most other people, but there is certainly no doubt that DLs work your legs GOOD!

I used to do deadlifts on leg day the same day as squats. Firehawk told me that I was nuts for doing it that way and suggested that I move deadlifts to back day (I still do SLDL on leg day).

My conventional deadlift just started jumping way up there (from what it was - still small, but way bigger than it used to be). I still feel it in my legs pretty hard - you know the part from the floor until time to start straightening up and let the back take completely over - but my back has gotten much stronger since I split them up and have almost trippled my DL weight.
