Lunges: form

When doing lunges do you step straight forward (how wide are your feet) or out at an angle (and if so what angle). Unfortunately I don't have the ability to do walking lunges.

There are a number of ways to perform a lunge -- several are reverenced below (several formats are not illustrated).
Dumbbell Lunge
Dumbbell Rear Lunge
Barbell Lunge
Barbell Rear Lunge
Dumbbell Side Lunge

The distance you lunge can also emphasize different muscles. A short lunge will focus on the quads where a long lunge will hit the hamstrings and glutes harder.

Is the form shown on that DB side lunge correct? The knee is traveling past the toe it looks like.

Yes its correct. The knee traveling past the toe tidbit as far as safety goes is overused.

Also, weight used in this case matters as i dont think anyone will use enough weight to actually tear anything in there.

I've been going out at about a 25 degree angle because I feel more stable. Is there anything wrong with this (seems like a mix between regular and side lunge)?

Hmmmm. Interesting. I may try that.

Or, if anyone has any recommendations for someone with knee issues, I'd be interested. My patella subluxes/dislocates very easily. I gave up lunges (lightly weighted) awhile back because of the discomfort and just stuck with modified squats and hamstring curls. I would be interested in somehow getting back into doing them. I'm also very hypermobile so I think I could handle them if I'm careful. Suggestions anyone?
