There's a difference between "not working out as hard" and just not working out...
and Tuna I think the idea is that there tend to be a lot of people who just go to the gym and literally waste space on a lot of limited equipment while just chatting it up. It becomes very frustrating when someone is literally camping in the squat rack or the bench press for 20 some minutes.
and damn, who goes to a coffee shop to drink coffee anyway?

Yeah, I got the point. My post was just in regard to all the complaining going on. Give the newbies a chance (new year's resolvers), they may get into it just as we all have. Not knowing what to do to make gym time *productive* can be daunting for a newbie.
Some people join gyms so that they can socialize with other fitness-minded people. Different strokes for different folks.
Those who are not serious will leave in time.
In the end it will never make a difference to those of us who work out. Is the *squat rack* ever too crowded to use. Doubt it, although you referenced that in your post). How about the deadlift station (if the gym even has an area to use for that). Doubt it.
Only trouble I've ever had is when the adductor/abductor machine has a line.... boy do I ever I hate that!
Besides, I've met quite a few cute ladies while waiting for an apparatus to open up. Still got in my workout.... :

I fully agree. However SurfinAmy's original post went something like this:
It looks like some of the guys don't even try hard enough at all.
No Grunting...No pain in the face...No straining with all their might...
Not once did she mention people not working out or just taking up space. Her complaint was about people not working out as hard as she does.

Obviously theres a difference between a somewhat controlled drop and rolling them across the gym, but a thud on the floor doesnt bother me one bit.

What I wanna know is how their "WEIGHTS" are all "messed up" anyway? My plates are made out of solid iron. I dunno about you, but those don't break that easily lol. Also, most floors in gyms are covered with rubber mats.
Besides, if you work out alone and go to failure on exercises, yu are probably going to be dropping plenty of weights. I think it's perfectly fine as long as you aren't too reckless about it.
Just my opinion.

In fact, the only ones grunting at my gym these days are the new year's kids who never lifted a weight before and are trying to do curls with a 100 pound barbell..... Nearly toppling over with the effort of swinging their back and got their eyes popping out of their sockets..... Children.....
But yea, my face distorts something terrible when lifting.... And I'm definitely pushing my muscles to the limit.... I just feel like doing it in silence....

I am the same way. I strain myself...really hard. If I don't then I don't feel like I worked hard enough that day. And if I give up on my last rep, my spotting partner hits me and makes me try again...UNTIL i do get that last rep. I sweat, and my face probably does some wierd color changes, however I don't grunt or growl. As a matter of fact, when I do, its usually on accident and the effort that my lungs put forth to make noise takes away from the effort they should be putting forth to provide my muscles some oxygen. That's just me...grunting makes me not get the weight up usually. But then some guys lift better when making noise, so its all a matter of personal ways of lifting I guess.

Tuna's got a good point. How many of them will give up? 9 out of 10, it's a fact. But maybe 3 of those 9 will come back in 6 months and go for another run. They could fail again. But what if 2 out of those last 3 try again, and maybe stick to it, and get into as much as everyone else on this forum. I don't know how many of those out there did this, but I know it took me four try's to get into lifting on a regular, serious, up-to-date basis. And now I'm all about it, lifting is my favorite hobby. Four try's....but I still made it eventually didn't I? Everyone has got a chance.

Dang it, I go there to DRINK COFFEE. If those "other people" want to talk, they should get the frick out of the coffee shop and talk somewhere appropriate- but not at a place where people come to ***DRINK COFFEE*** and eat "muffins" and "scones" and such.
Can't the "talkers" take it outside, maybe go home and just talk like the pathetic bunch of ninnies that they truly are???
God I'm so sick of those people!!!!

Actually, yah, you're right, I guess I should of said that people who want to talk should go to a pub or go outside where they can chat away for hours and not bother anyone! Coffee shop was the wrong place to suggest!

Don't really know what they're made of, but I've seen many chipped plates, usually around the place you insert the bar. The dumb bells also chip if you accidentally bump them together, I had this set at one gym where I wound up with pieces falling in my face during a set.

-It's not the plates, its the dumbells. The handles on dumbells don't get bigger with larger weights, but the force exerted on the handles does. When you repeatedly drop a 120 pounder, the handle eventually bends. The more they are dropped, the more you notice it.
As for dropping weights, we'll have to disagree. I consider it poor form, potentially dangerous, and destructive to the gym floor and the equipment.

Amy, I would like to know what you have against me. All I did was respond to your post. And just because I said a few things, you resort to name calling. I have nothing against you at all. I just disagreed with your stance. As adults, all we have to do is agree to disagree and we can do that without calling each other names (such as pompous). And now you have the "wa-wa-" comment. You need to learn how to deal with people who just happen to disagree with you or offer another opinion or approach. Name calling and wa wa comments are totally inappropriate.

I'll bring up this point, theres a difference between dropping a weight and letting it hit with a thud. You can just drop the weights out of your hands from your shoulders, or you can let them kind of swing down, obviously without much resistence from the person holding them. Do you have a problem with that? Either way they hit pretty hard on the floor, obviously the second approach not as much. I just dont see how anyone can do controlled 120 lbs NEGATIVE hammer curls without putting tons of strain on their shoulders that could lead to injury.
As far as destroying the gym floor, atleast at my gym there are thick rubber mats around the DBs theres no damage being done to the floor itself. How you put the weight down has nothing to do with form, form is the actual lift.

haha now that you said that I'm going to try one today just to see how it feels, I've shamed myself by saying I dont see how anyone can do it, and if I have to hurt myself to be one of them so be it haha.

Ditto.
I do see what you are trying to say Amy, but me personally i dont like to scream doing my last rep, altho i'd have a monstrously red face and breathing intensely pushing the reps, but not everybody is the same. I guess if you arent sweating, then something is seriously wrong as i dont think enough energy is being used. I notice that there are like groups that go to Gym's, half would go to train their brains out, others would go to flex around doing moderate weights.
