Problem With Pulldowns

I find that for myself the big problem with lat pulldowns is that I feel most of the work in the teres major rather than the actual lats. By this I mean I don't feel the stretch from where the lats start in the lower middle back and I'm wondering if I might be doing something wrong!? The big problem I have is that with my long arms, by the time I've raised the weight back to the starting point my lats don't get the full stretch which I feel is important. Chin ups on the other hand really DO give that full stretch but shouldn't be started first. An other question is when doing pulldowns, is it essential to pull the bar all the way down to your upper chest or just at chin level?

I don't actually touch my chest (but I have a small chest), but I do go below my chin a bit. I guess about neck level.
