Pullovers Myth
Do pullovers whether barbell or dumbbell really enlarge the thorax?
I've heard that there has never been any substancial proof to this.

or something like that.

I do them with a DB. Straight arms to emphasize the chest, bent arms for the lats.

I do something like that, except - My back & butt are totally supported by the bench
- I don't pull the weight up beyond the 45 degree mark (since it's from that point that the load is reduced from you triceps and transfered as a vertical load to the delts).
As far as enlargment of the thorax is concerned, it recruits a whole batch of chest & abdominal muscle. It seems that from that perspective, the thorax would become 'enlarged'.

what the trainer told me was that the ribcage itself actually increased in girth by at least a little bit.

Perhaps it is , but a great deal of the old time lifters used that movment and many of them have tremendous rib cages (Bob Hoffman for example). I used to do them when I was teen (supersetted with squats), and I really can't say it didn't help.

Yup. Just another myth. But like Cursor said, it builds the muscles of the thorax so maybe that's why people think expands the rib cage. It is a good exercise.

Perhaps I should of explained.....
It is a great exercise, but does not expand your ribcage although the muscles in the area will grow and may give the effect of a wider grip cage.
