Setting Goals

I have a small question concerning what kind of goals to set for myself. Basiclly I was wondering if there was a difference between setting a goal for reps vs. setting a goal for 1RM in terms of muscle development. Personally my current goal for flat bench is to do my working sets at 205 with 4-6 reps. Would it be more beneficial to my muscles to work for a 1RM of say 245.

Could be a dumb question, but i was just wondering what would be better for overall growth.

either way works.

pick which one works for you (although my personal preference is reps and i don't have a clue what my 1RM is)

three norms is correct Drew. Don't limit yourself. Lifting for size/development isn't an exact science. Everyone is different and will react differently to varied stimuli. Your goal is muscle size/growth. Don't just mindlessly apply one formula and hope it works. Building size is all about getting muscles to adapt to greater and progressive workloads. Ultimately it will take a variety of methods to achieve your goal including progressive set/rep range or chasing 1RM ala Mentzer. There are no hard rules about which is better - they both have a place as part of your planning and implementation
