silly question
ok folk you all know i will try many shedules with respect to anyone who asks me to try it.
5x5 3x8 or 1 set of max rep
Now if you use 5x5 it seems ok on bi tri chest lat etc.
But on delts you need to hit 3 heads
So is delts a 5x5 on all heads which is now like 75 reps to hit all heads ?
And on chest do we still try to hit every angle of the pec ?
I know its late but happy thanks giving to all usa folk

Thanks for the last statement bro. Maybe one of the guru's here can chime in on what's the best overall routine for those muscles. I personally do what I feel like doing, I dont conform to any one routine.

Something like 5x5 on each head of the delts is probably going a bit overboard mate esp if you're using it as part of a prog not a "one off shock" routine. Delts get blasted alot during other exercises anyway like any bench presses, bicep curls etc. esp front delts. So you only really need a compensatory type workout. Keep it simple - military press (heavy) any style you want, maybe even 5x5 here!!? But remember they will fatigue pretty early. Then follow with lateral raises (mod light) and plenty of rear delt work as they are often overlooked.
Chest routines should try to hit diff angles. I assume here you mean flat, incline, decline? Different emphasis can also be achieved through a change in hand position.
Every chest session I begin with a diff exercise, go heavy with that and work the other exercises from there. So each angle gets a real workout.
Mate I'm 52 and still learning esp new techniques and the science behind it. cheers

I dont believe in isolating the heads. Do not even believe it is effectively achieved. Stick with compunds.

The biggest and bestest natural shoulders I ever saw were built with heavy, low rep, military press and dumbell shoulder press.
Will it be perfect for you? Hell, who knows...but it might.

What Maxgain said. 5x5 is about using the most effective exercises to get a lot of work done with little time. There's no isolating different heads and no using different angles, unless you are alternating them from workout to workout. You don't work several angles in one workout.
DL, squat, rows, bench, OHP, what muscles are missing being worked with this?

Hey Mick, I know you are a big guy who has been lifting for many years. With this in mind, do you currently have weak body parts you need to address in your training? For example: Does your upper chest lag in development to your lower pecs? Do your rear delts lag in comparison to the side and front heads of your delts?
Or do you see your physique as being fairly symmetrical and balanced overall?

Thanks all for input, Ironman i develope quite well but rear delts seem to not respond to well.
I have just read an old article from Arni and franko columbu from the 70s and they both trained rear delts with every workout as they both had same prob.
My reason for asking about 5x5 was i have always trained to develope the body as a whole in correct proportion, so i just found it hard to understand missing rear delt in 1 workout then front delt another time and so forth.
This is why i like this site as, its like a family...even though there are a few naughty bro's and sisters lol.
Thanks again for input all

Try doing bent over rows with the elbows flared out rather than tucked into your sides. Use a heavy weight and you are guaranteed to hit the rear delts and force them to grow.

What he said. And while doing what he said, pull closer to your chest rather than closer to your navel. The higher on your torso the bar is being pulled to, the more delts are involved.

I've used face pulls in the past (high pulley rows with a rope to your face) but lately I've had some great results with bands.
Remember the old time "chest expander", the spring contraption that you'd do reverse flys with? They've recently been reborn in the form of resistance bands. You can get them at Oldtime Strongman Strength Training Equipment Books and Courses
I'm up to two 50lb (orange) bands for 9 reps. My upper back has never felt stronger and I'm seeing some carry over strength in all of my pushing and pulling exercises.
