Tendonitis in the Achilles - Squats Question

I started the 5x5 routine last year after reading about it in V's thread.

Monday: Squats, Benching, Rows
Weds: Squats, Military Presses, Deadlifts, Chins
Friday: Squats, Benching, Rows

I loved it. At one point during the year I developed tendonitis in the achilles.

After going through PT it was better except for anytime I try squats and deads. The pain will come back a little the next day. Not a lot, but enough to know that if I continue it will get worse. Other than that, any other activity is fine (Leg press, leg curls, rows, spinning, etc...) other than anything high impact on the foot.

My question is this. If it turns out I am no longer able to do squats and deads, what would people suggest I substitute them with and still gain enough benefits within the rhelm of this 5x5 routine? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well i have a lower spine injury and squatting heavy is totally a no go as is deadlifting, I recently read 2 books by Mike Mentzer and he used lighter weights controlled with slow reps, and i can tell you its brutal, But with no injury probs.
For legs i now use Leg ext, Rear leg bicep curl, body squats to failure and calf raise.
And my legs are growing, As for dead lifts his book states that if it causes pain just do away with them

Thanks Bodyshop. That's what I kind of figured. I apprecaite the input, and will keep that in mind if I end up needing to cancel the squats and deads.

Can you leg press? Can you still row (even seated cable rows)? Can you do chin ups?

Nothing beats squats and deads... but you know ... if you can't do them, other options beat doing nothing.
