I've been doing some thinking in the last week and I decided to share my thoughts with you all. For those who don't know, K.I.S.S. stands for keep it simple stupid. When you think about it, being healthy is simply about diet and exercise. All you have to do is eat clean end get some exercise consistantly and you'll be fine a look good right? Recently however, it seems like the only way to get a great body is to do everything in a precise manner. Everything seems to be about counting your calories or calculating your BMR or using X amount of sets/reps etc. I know that it's all about making a lifestyle change, but I honestly don't think I could do this kind of thing for the rest of my life. Don't get me wrong, I love exercising and eating healthy, but are the methods talked about here really the only way to do it? Is it possible to do things slightly differently than everyone and still succeed? Can someone get healthy and look good by K.I.S.S.
Let's look at the three aspects of fitness. Diet, resistance training, cardio. The common methods taught for diet are to calculate the calories you burn and take in, count you macronutrients, and time your meals a certain way. K.I.S.S. would just say to cut out all junk foods, eat clean, and eat a good amount of food when your hungry. The common methods taught for resistance training is that you have to do heavy weight training with barbells in order to get the best results. K.I.S.S. would say that you can get good resistance training from more than just barbells. A person can also train with dumbbells or do some sort of army style training with
bodyweight exercises and preserve (if not gain) muscle. The common methods taught for cardio are to do HIIT or low intensity or moderate intesnsity and to do them at a certain time. K.I.S.S. would say that it doesn't matter. Just be active. Play a sport, run around your neighborhood, dance, whatever. And don't do it just for the sake of trying to lose weight. Try doing it for the fun of it too because it will allow you to stick with it and therefore go at a higher intensity. As long as you don't spend the entire day on your ass, you're doing things right. See what I mean?
But then again all of this could just be overanalysis. Sometimes I wish I could brainwash myself and just forget everything and just eat healthy foods when I'm hungry and be active. I could probably have an AMAZING body if I just did that. But I'm stuck in this mindset. The traditional bodybuilding method has been preached as the one and only way to do things and anytime I think about doing something different like lifting with dumbbells or bodyweight exercises instead of barbells, I start to get this voice in my head that says, "That's not how everyone else does it so if you do it that way, you'll get nowhere." The thing is that I haven't seen a lot of people out there who have fitness/bodybulding as PART of their lives. It seems like almost all of the best looking people out there focus their efforts soley on looking good. Sure doing that can get a person to a low
body fat percentage, but keeping it simple can get you to a good place as well. You might not be as cut as the professional bodybuilders, but you'll more than likely look better than you did before. I look at it like this. Why do people want to get cut? To look good because they feel it attracts the opposite sex. But you don't have to be extremely cut to do it, you just have to look better than the average person. If the confidence is there, a guy at 10-12% body fat can get as many if not more women than a guy at 6-7% body fat. The point is that rather than focusing only on improving how your body looks, I think it's better to go for a balanced improvement of your mind, body, and spirit. In this case, you can have your cake and eat it too. My hope is that I can get to the point again where it all just happens naturally and I don't even have to think about how many calories I'm eating or whether I'm doing enough sets/reps. There are so many other aspects of my life I'd like to work on especially since I'm going to college this fall. Like I said, I want for fitness to be part of my life, but I want it to be a building block for a better me, not the hammer that tears me down.
And yes I understand that this is a bodybuilding forum where most people here are only (or mostly) concerned with the asthetics aspect of it and are trying to get as big and stong as possible. But for the non-bodybuilder, I think the K.I.S.S. method can be just as effective to give someone a great body, improve their fitness, and still be able to go out and enjoy life. Just my $0.02
