trap bars

I'm seeing lots of talk about this in a journal, and someone is thinking about investing in one of these (umm, Welch).

I'd say if anyone is thinking about buying one of these, they should invest their money in a pair of farmers implements instead, this is close to the same as trapbars only you can do more things with the farmers and it's a better "core" strengthener, more for your money.

unlike a trapbar the farmers implements are not connected together, your stabilizers will come into play more, and with the weight being free like this you can also use it to do sidebends and suit-case deadlifts with "HEAVIER" weight , where do you see dumbells with up to 200lbs? or even capable of loading 200?

Also, you can go for a stroll with the farmers, for a good strength/cardio/endurance workout, walking with a trapbar does not look safe to me.

I'm a fan of pulling from the sides no matter what anyone else will say, their are lots of high school kids pulling with a trapbar and bragging about their lifts giveing it a bad name (it's not about that with me) I pulled from the sides to get stronger, and thats what happened for me, but I never used a trapbar, I've always used the "farmers".

these can be purchased form www.brutestrength.com or just do a search on strongman equipment, or you could do like I did when I first started, I purchased 2-hammer curl/tricep bars and pulling and carring them.

I agree. I have a trap bar that I hardly ever use, it's a good piece of equipment, and TBDL's are a great exercise, but like Luke said there's a lot more you can do with a set of farmers.

I'm thinking of the trap bar for shrugs - just for variation instead of having to do them from the front sometimes, the back sometimes, using dumbells sometimes - just an additional piece of equipment for shrugging with.

Another reason I'm considering one is because my wife has just recently started lifting again. She hasn't lifted in years and hasn't even been able to consider it for the past several years. We've mostly been worried about keepin her alive. Now that she seems to finally be healing up, she is ready to begin some resistance training - slowly and carefully to strengthen her body - especially her back. Deadlifts even with an empty bar are absolutely out of the question for her right now. But being one of the best exercises there are, she wants to work up to doing them. Right now she is doing very light dumbell DL's and some cable work (Thank you MostMuscle for the tips on how to help her get built up to doing real DLs, she's actually made good progress in only two weeks). The trap bar looks like a way to help get the legs stronger, gradually improve the back, and work up to doing DLs with a barbell. Whether this will work or not, I have no idea. I'm going to have to find one and try it out and see exactly what the movement feels like first - then if it seems like it will strengthen where she needs it or give some variety to shrugs, I'll buy one. If not, I won't. I can't actually afford to throw away money on equipment that won't be used.

Having been temporarily unable to even walk without assistance of a cane 2 years ago, I know that there are certain lifts that are not advisable for one person which are great for another. I also know that if one has enough desire to do it, they can find a variation or adaptation of that lift to build up to doing it right. However, there comes a time when one is able to actually do it - they have to let go of the ego, drop the weight, and do it right.

Thanks for the information, it will be useful to keep in mind when I find one to try out.

Deadlifting with a parallel grip (e.x. trap bar, farmers, DB's to the side) allows the weight to be closer to your center, allowing for a much more mechanically efficient pull. You'll be able to pull more weight this way and it's a safer movement than deadlifting with a bar. The main difference between the farmers and the trap bar is the trap bar is limited in way the farmers are not. It's also fairly simple to make farmers implements... good luck trying to make a trap bar!

True. They're better for me because I have trouble deadlifting bent leggged style. Trap bar deadlifts are still more of a squat though, would you agree?
