Upset = bad workout?

Just wondering if anyone else here has experienced this...

I had a horrible day at work yesterday....was written up and reprimanded on something that was out of my control. More than anything, work issues make me pretty upset and I tend to brood on this kind of thing quite extensively.

Today I went in to do my usual chest/tris day, I had slept normally, ate normally, etc. Yet when I began my first set for my db bench, about halfway through my right arm decided "um.......*no*" and I had to stop my set midway through. And this was a weight that I can normally handle! The rest of the workout was OK...not mind-blowing, but I didn't have any more bizarre failures.

I was just curious as to whether mood can factor into workouts...maybe my mind just wasn't in the right place??

Of course your mood can factor into how your workouts might be. The question is how you will use that mood to your advantage. The hardest thing is when your sad like a break up. Thats real hard to get through and still ahve good workouts. In your case.....it sounds like you got a talkin to and that you gota warning. The best thing to do is use that workout to blow of that steam and to forget about it and go to work and bust your ass and try not to do it again. Its easy to say this stuff to you but i hope this helps a lil. I hope it gets better.

When I'm in a bad mood I usually do a lot better, lifting usually clears my mind of pretty much anything else besides moving weight around.

Mood & mind set play a major part in your workout. Sometimes I find myself dwelling over something stupid and lose track of time between sets. You feel real good (stupid) after a 5 minute break. Or you can get real pumped up and have a powerful workout. Ya never know.

Sorry you had a bad day. And I'm sure you'll make adjustments to circumvent the certain thing beyond your control. But WE need to remember that holding weights over our head and not focusing on what we're doing can also lead to a "bad day".

Definitely your mood and mind play a huge factor in how well you perform on any given day. Your body does what your mind tells it to, and if you are distracted from concentrating, focusing and applying 100%, whether it be from anger, sadness, stress, frustration, etc., your workouts can easily be less than optimal.

My mood definately affects my workouts. If I'm mad I'll usually fly thru a workout like it wasn't anything at all. But if I'm sad it can be hard to even get myself to start a workout.

If I'm worried about something or sad, I have subpar workouts because of the accompanying depression.

But when something upsetting leads me to anger, my workouts kick @ss. Nothing like a day of piss and vinegar to make you fire those weights up.

So, don't get depressed, get mad. It's cathartic.

i agree with most of your statements about being "pissed off" to the point the anger makes you train even harder, but i havent come across that type of real anger yet to the point where your lifting for the anger, i think i woudlnt mind it if it means you train even harder, heck who doesnt want even better workouts.:P.

I tend to do 5 mins on the bag to warm up when I'm in a bad mood or just need to let off some steam.

Calms me down for my workout.

Thanks for the replies. Going to the gym is normally very meditative for me....something that I really enjoy and look forward to every day. Yesterday was just a bad day because I was distracted.

Today I'm going in for my run. Got my iPod handy, so that I can slip away into aerobic+musical bliss.

Reprimanded. Are you in the military or the police?
