Weird cardio machine
I just started going to my schools gym (north texas, maybe someone here goes there) and i was walking out past the cardio equipment and i see the weirdest cardio machine i have ever seen. It is like a bicycle but for the arms. Has anyone seen that, and why would anyone use it? seems pointless.

I've seen it before, haha. I think it's supposed to stretch you out or something. I'm not really quite sure. Maybe someone here could shed some light on it for the both of us.

It's more specialized to be cardio for someone who has some type of knee or hip injury that would prevent them from doing even cycling work...

Does anyone have experience with this machine? It actually sounds like a good idea for someone like me, who currently have weird aches in my hip but can't keep out of the gym.

But for your arms?

Does anyone have a pic or link of this thing? I'm having a hard time getting a mental picture.

It's a machine used mostly in physical therapy, you sit on a seat and there are handles where you grab with your arms and it rotates just like a bike.

Wow, I actually really like the sound of this thing. I broke my pelvis last year and while in traction they had to put a rod through my knee. So now I have hip and knee issues This would be a great way to get some cardio in without the stress of running

Yes i have seen it at the local ymca where my family lives. i imagine it would build some muscle endurance in your arms. also, it would burn calories, but probably not as much as bike (unless, you can't do bike). Since it doesn't seem like you have this problem, you're probably better off just sticking to regular weight trainging and biking.

That doesn't sound like it would be nearly as effective at burning calories or working the cardiovascular system as a bike or treadmill, considering that no large muscle groups are getting worked. But I suppose if doing anything with legs is out of the question....

What's so weird about it? Who ever said cardio had to focus solely on the legs? Correct you won't be able to burn calories as fast using your arms vs legs but it's good for warm ups and or cardio when your legs are sore.
You want to talk weird what about that "Range Of Motion" machine they advertise in airline magazines. You know the one that costs $15,000 and gives you an incredible workout in just 4 minutes 3x a week.

I saw that ad and about died laughing. Silly us, devoting hours each week to staying fit and healthy!

There are a number of wheelchair bound people at my gym who use the machine for cardio. Most of them you can remove the seat on it so someone in a wheel chair can use it.

I tried this one today, and it really killed my arms after a few minutes, guessing this has a direct link with my less than strong arms. My heartrate did not exeed 125 or so however, so the quest for cardio without working the legs is not over.

your arms are probably just not used to sustaining constant work for minutes at a time.
