Initially, to complement a background in gymnastics. Those were the pink dumbbell days.
Then it turned into a desire for bigger muscles even though I was told I was "in the wrong place" because I was "just a girl." At that point it was pure vanity, even though I had no real idea of what I was doing.
At some point, vanity changed into a true interest in the health benefits and the science behind it all.

...And this passion for health, fitness and teaching became my career. I have since retired the pink dumbbells.

I saw a big dude on the cover of Muscle and Fitness magazine, and right then, I wanted to be that big and look huge like that. I bought that magazine, read it from cover to cover, began working out and learning how to eat properly. The rest is history.

Honestly what made me start training wasn't any other part of my body but my tiny biceps/triceps compared to my forearms (as i am a Musician for over 10yrs now, and my forearms were too overdeveloped as a result of it, with ape like looking arms becuae of small upper arms). That was my main reason, to seriously pack on some mass in the arms, and then as i started i got more into it and loved working out all bodyparts, chest, back, legs, calfs, and its something i really enjoy and will be doing for life : .

I was lucky to have a friend I knew from college that got me a job where he was working. He was really into weights and bodybuilding (still is). I didn't go to him for help until I was depressed and hit rock bottom on why i couldn't lose weight. He sat me down and explained why i needed to lift weights, why I needed to eat properly, why I needed to do cardio. After a bit of a rocky start, I got real consistent and dropped over 70lbs. Then after doing higher rep stuff for awhile, i went to a powerlifting meet and really felt like that was going to be my passion. And now, I'm getting ready to finally do a powerlifting meet late this year or early next, whenever the AAPF state meet is held next.

I want to be as big as I can get, but I want to be every bit as strong as I look. I came across someone on another board that told me Clay Brandenburg was from Michigan and owned a powerlifting gym. I did some research and found out it was like a 5 minute drive from my house to the gym lol, so i started going, and that's the best thing I could have ever done for my early lifting career thus far.

In high school I was a rower, so I was thin and ripped. Played rec sports through college and lifted a little, so I was still in pretty good shape.

Fast-forward to age 30: Overweight, lazy and not much to look at. Started running and hitting the machines, then "graduated" to free weights. I was tired of being weak and mushy. Now my motivation is functional strength -- the kind that helps you prevent injuries. It's nice to look wider and more solid, too. :

After retiring from team sports (36 yr) looked to new personal challenges. Marathon! Never got to run the full 42 kms though, always seemed to get sick. With intense training and diet, my immune system finally packed up and I got gladular fever trying to get down to my running weight (63kgs) The after shock effect was chronic fatigue. I was 42yrs old, on drugs for fatigue and depression for the next 3 yrs. One day I threw the pills into the garbage and instinctively knew I had to put on weight. The Gym was truely my godsend. I walked in 45 yrs old, 61kgs and am now 50yrs and 78 kgs. Bench is at 200lbs and I'm giving the younger guys a run for their money!! as well as some advice. I'll never do cardio again lol !!!
