What spurred you to weight train?

How did you people start training in the beginning? Was it purely bodybuilding first or power training? I myself just gradually became interested in lifting weights until I really wanted a challenge. I wish I'd started powerlifting from the begining now!

I always thought it would be cool to be strong. I had above average strength naturally and I wanted to enhance that. So in high school I went to the school gym with two of my friends who had lifted a little bit before and then I took weight training for PE my junior and senior years.

Well, my very FIRST attempt at training was in athletics for baseball, and that was basic 3 x 10 stuff. After that I was doing weight lifting in the off-season, and since the teacher running that was the power lifting coach we were also doing some power lifting.

Bodybuilding was a "new fad" in fitness for women in 1980. I took a class, then another, then I was invited to take the judging certification course because of my interest in and understanding of it.

Who could say that ladies like Rachel McLish, Kiki Eloma, Diana Dennis, Carla Dunlop and Candy Csentsis weren't motivation to workout with weights?

Ditto on the baseball lifting from Cort. Sophomore year of high school is the first time I was ever lifting in the gym. This time around though, I'm more geared towards appearance than function. That'll change in the future.

i was tired of being overweight and out of shape, so i started off just wanting to get "toned" (which is how noob i was). gradually got more fascinated by bodybuilding, but this time around, it's powerlifting just to feed a badly starved ego, lol.

When I was a teen I figure skated and I used to go to the gym in the mornings to improve my cardio.. then I would lift the pink weights to tone up hahaha! Then when I was 17 I started playing rugby so I started to try to put on some size since I was a forward (flank!) and I needed to be able to take people out.

In between there I also took an "healthy lifestyle" course at school which was basically step areobics and wieght training 3X a week and goal setting/motivation/healthy weight loss/active lifestyle classes the other 2 days a week. Of all the classes I took in highschool that was my favourite.

don't remember to be quite honest I remember lifting on and off (emphasis on the off) since i started uni (moved into a house with a gym setup in the garage).

I'm concerned mainly with getting larger and more proportioned but that will not happen without my getting a lot stronger so ... that's how I try and train.

How did we start training? In most cases terribly! Everyone remember the habits they had those first 2 weeks in the gym..... ever.

My wife and I started out just over a year ago with the goal to lose weight. From July to December we did only cardio exercise and diet. When the weather got too cold and darkness fell too early, we joined our local YMCA to have access to their gym and cardi workout equipment. The availability of all that weight lifting equipment encouraged us to start a lifting routine. In the 8 months since, we have shifted to more emphasis on the weights and less on the cardio.
