FWIW, I always have my ipod on, but I don't mind people talking to me. I like it, actually. Except during cardio because I'm too out of breath to talk, and I'm listening to an audiobook.
I love that when I go to the gym (at my normal time anyway) that I know at least the names of a couple of people. I just use my ipod because I don't care much for the music they play at the gym. I have the volume low enough that I can carry on a conversation. It's fun to shoot the breeze a bit in between sets.
