What type of cardio for aerobic gains not fat loss?

I have to get in better cariovascular condition so I am going to start doing some cardio. My primary goal is not fat loss but more endurance and increased lung capacity. Now I know I will probably lose some weight during this but to try and combat that I am going to increase my calories and I have started to take glutamine to help fight any muscle loss. I will still be weight training during this time and I only plan on doing the cardio 1-2x a week on non weight training days. My main question is is what should my heart rate be for aerobic activity and should I plan for longer durations of cardio as oppossed to something like HIIT.

Just work harder than you would for fat loss (simple answer). Sprinting is great. So are bear crawls, mountain climbers, zimmers, basically anything that's going to make a high school athlete shudder.

Glutamine will not help prevent muscle loss. Glutamine will actually not do anything for you when supplemented.

Get a heart rate monitor, and check your heart rate when you feel your muscles start burning, this is your lactic threshhold. Try to spend most of your time at or above your lactic threshold, this is how modern marathoners and other long distance runners are getting so fast. HIIT cardio and SS can both put you above your lactic threshold, so do both.
