No but how frustrating is it when some lard ass walks on the treadmill (at a pace half what I do when I go to the water fountain) for an hour while you wait to do 20 minutes of a full sprint of HIIT?

How frustrating is it when people take up the squat rack for 20 minutes to do 50 lb (the bar plus a 2 1/2) curls?

How frustrating is it when you try to tell someone who has just completed a 50rep set while carrying on a full conversation with someone and won't let you work in b/c they only have 3 more sets and they have to rest exactly 60 seconds (mearured with a watch) between them.

All this then they respond do your good hearted advise with a look of disgust as if to say "what would you know, you are only one of the fittest people in town and constantly get asked if you're on steroids, but I watched Dr. Phil that mountain of muscle who told me to do it this way" with out replieing "round is a shape so technically you are in shape, and I admire your dedication it has been 1 hour since your last doughnut and this is the second time you've been here in one month, wow where do you find the time?

I agree go hard or go home. That doesn't mean everyone has to put up big lifts but don't waste your (and more importantly) my time. Brace yourselves for the new years crowd in a few weeks.

I agree with you rbuch on the go hard or go home. Fat won't be lost and muscle won't be gained without actual work. Many people seem to think that just by working out they will see a magical transformation lol.

many people also assume "going to the gym" = "working out"

I think that the most stupid people at the gym are the ones who don't put their weight back (dumbbells for example) after they are done with the bench or a machine. I feel really bad for the trainers who work there ( sometimes even a female trainer) have to un-load those 45 plates and move those 80+ lbs dumbbell to where they belong. When i see a female trainer moving 45 plates, i help out, but still, i really don't like people who don't put their weight back.
I don't care if you are putting up incredible amount of weight, i drop respect for you if you don't put back your weight.

Most people don't know that what they are doing is wrong or ineffecient. Did you offer any advice?

Man, I friggin' HATE that! Nothing like having to walk all over the place searching for the plate mates.

Exactly, it's great. Not only that, but you can listen to whatever music you want. I usually just load up my winamp, and play Rocky soundtrack mp3s from my computer for motivation while I work out.

I agree dumbells should have to be racked, but I prefer places where it's common practice to leave the some bigger plates on (i.e. on 45/side on a bench 25/side on a EZ and a 100/side on leg press) it's kind of stupid for 90% of the people to take a plate on and off and on and off just incase someone wants to do 10 lb leg presses (100/side is only about 140 lbs of resistance about the same as a squat with no wieght for most people)

But it is still courtoius to take the extra off i.e. don't just walk away but take it down to a "base" wieght so the next person can add to it.

What I really hate is people who drop dumbells often from a few feet up and often a few feet from my legs. This is how they get broken (so I can't use them) and if one slams me in the shin you better bet a simple "sorry" will not suffice.

I think they should strip even the 45s/side on bench or squat rack. When I warm up, I always do a set with the bar and sometimes 95 before going to 135. A lot of people also can't use 135 right off the bat, which is more common in my gym in my hometown which is family oriented.

Mav...you should know better than to try and offer advice to someone at the gym lol

It's the old toilet seat up or down sort of issue. I work in a building with 5 men and one woman, thus since the seat is up 84% of the time it make more sense for her to drop it once than us to lift it 5 times.

If you can't deal with one 45 lb plate you have no real place in the free wieghts section.

rbuchman - the biggest guys on the planet do a warmup set with the bar first.

i will never EVER work out at home, even had i the best equipped gym going - it just plain sucks. it's lonely and it's boring and there's nobody around to feel superior to or try to catch up to.

I've been slowly assembling a home gym. About all I have left to get is a good power rack with a lat tower/low cable, another olympic bar and a few more plates. I have been debating with myself on the very points raised by 3N and others. Namely, will my wife & I get bored working out at home and have trouble sticking to our routine?

We both hate the crowds at the gym right after New Year and right before Spring Break, but we enjoy seeing other folks working out and have become friendly with some of the other regulars. We've both had similar experiences with jerkoffs hogging equipment, leaving weights scattered everywhere, etc. but have managed to work around it.

We are starting on our second year of gym membership and still have not made the decision to either stay with the gym or stay home. As it is, with both options, we can at least still get a workout if the weather is too bad to drive the few miles to the gym, or if it is just too damn crowded.

i agree with 3norns, I also belive that working out at home could get lonely and boring at times. it's always a motivation to see someone who is bigger for the goals and who is relatively smaller to feel good about myself.

yeah, i know it's wrong, but i like checking out the girls when i go get my water from the fountation too.
