I could never lift barefoot. I know Arnold did it, and it seems many here do it....I can't relate to the experience.
Besides feeling intimidated (which I think I would) that I'd drop a plate or bar on my foot (which may inhibit my willingness to lift heavy) and I'd be so ginger that I wouldn't be effective.
Can you guys explain to me the barefoot thing?
We have a few guys (and gals) at the club who wear flip flops or sandals, and I just so don't get it. I love to support I feel in my boots. I sometimes have to wear regular kicks, but I much prefer my boots.

I like to relax so when I'm home I prefer not to wear anything in the house. Because my gym is in my basement there aren't any rules that say I have to wear shoes. And I'm not about to start one either, lol.
Can't see how wearing shoes is going to keep my foot from hurting is I drop a plate on it. Bare foot or not, that sucker is going to hurt!
It seems to be one of those things you either enjoy or not.

I've had a few bounce off the toe of my shoe, didn't really hurt. On the other hand if it had landed solidly on my toe with no rubber protecting it...

Iron days - tank top (no bra), running shorts and no shoes.
Aerobic days - sports bra, shirt, running shorts and shoes.
Since I workout at home - I don't care what others think

For Shoes I wear wrestling high tops. They give me the support I like while still letting me sit flat footed and feel the floor!

I still don't "get" it!
Can someone explain to me HOW you lift barefoot? I mean this with all sincerity, I just can't comprehend this. Barefoot, just walking around the house, I notice I move a lot more gingerly, just because "memory" keeps me alert so I don't just stub my toe (and if a little thing like that hurts barefoot and doesn't hurt while wearing shoes),....I truly, honestly, and most sincerely do not understand the how's and why's of lifting barefoot.
This is non-judgemental, mind you, but thirsty curiosity of mine to understand. Is there supposed to be some advantage to doing this? Is it perceived as 100% comfort-related? (If that's what it is, I'd never be comfy lifting barefoot).
And I still stick by the "it'd hurt more dropping iron on a bare foot than on my boot" thingie.....

Yes its comfort related. U have become used to using shoes/slippers, in the house and out. But remember our feet were designed to walk barefeet, they provide better "grip". Some 5km meter runners prefer running barefeet. I do tkd, and its extremely uncomfortable for me to do the moves when wearing a shoe. Barefoot provides more mobility.
For lifting safety, I completey agree with u, shoes provide some degree of safety against dropping of weights.

Maybe you think about NOT dropping something on your foot if there is no protection. Actually, I don't really think about it. Just lift.
