Don't have the room in my basement, besides, I don't doubt what you said, olympic lifts are just too damn hard lol.

Id imagine the are comparable to deadlifts, and I'm breathin pretty darn good after those. But still, if that were the case and you could just weightlift and eat restricted calories, why wouldn't most bodybuilders do that and get away from the cardio since most that wanna be huge hate doing it anyway? It's an illogical train of thought.

Then again, maybe that works for some body types, but not for others, like people that can put fat on real easily.

Almost every study I've read is either on an obese subjects or on athletes. Which I am neither.

Fire - You CANNOT maintain the same caloric intake as you currently are doing and drop the cardio and expect to still lose fat. Too many calories in and you will either gain or maintain your current status.
I already eat low enough that if I do nothing all day, it's still lower than my BMR, therefore I SHOULD LOSE, but I don't.

Then you need to cycle the calories. Example: 1800 calories day 1, 2500 calories day 2, 1500 calories day 3, then back to 1800 calories day 4. I picked these numbers out of the air. They have to match your body's ability to burn them. For instance, if your BMR is 1800. This has some days eating below BMR and some days above it. What happens is it keeps the body guessing should I conserve or burn.

I get what you are saying, but why bother cycling when i could just eat 1800 every day? Why do you want your body to guess whether to conserve or burn when it can just BURN? lol

Because the body is smart and adapts to the same amout of caloric intake. The easiest way is to cycle either the routine or the caloric intake.

I knew you would say that!!! I don't have room either, so I do them outside!
It is hard thats the whole point! Do what you want I only wanted to say that certain weightlifting will cause fat loss!

It's not even close to deadlifts, clean and press/push press for reps is the most demanding exercise done with a barbell. The bodybuilding issue is not a good way to put that firehawk, that "world" is so "outer space" now. Let me tell you that back in the day (before drugs/supplements) men did only did weightlifting (full body workouts, no cardio) they were called "strongmen" their was no such thing as "bodybuilding" but they did a posing act first with special lighting and they where very muscular. I do what I consider strength cardio carrying heavy weights for a couple hundred feet, no arobics, I can dim the lights in my living room get a fake tan and put some oil on and look pretty cut up. Plus I think this exercise would disrupt the modern bodybuilders routine with the fear of overtraining, he would miss out on some single muscle group exercises.

good point, but it's still going to give any person a full head to toe workout, building, muscle, and strength, and hitting the cardiovascalar system HARD all at one time, that will burn fat, but hey I only wanted to answer question, but if no here has done this, or if your not going to try it or anything, then you or no one else will never know so, whatever!

"Fire - You CANNOT maintain the same caloric intake as you currently are doing and drop the cardio and expect to still lose fat. Too many calories in and you will either gain or maintain your current status."

The answer is burn more calories that you consume no matter how you burn them, you just need to burn them. So you say that you are already eating lower than your BMR which means you should be burning fat without doing anything right. Well maybe you are just being impatient huh? According to some studies it takes your body 21 days to notice that something has changed. So if you are dieting and in 2 weeks you have not noticed anythign so you change your diet agin then the 21 day process starts over. Now let's do some math to see if time is your enemy here.

Let's say your BMR is 2000 calories and you create a deficit of 200 calories to 1800. Well 1 pound of fat is 3500 calories so to lose 1 pound you need to burn 3500 calories first. So without weight lifting and JUST calorie reduction you are looking at a rate of losing 1 pound every 17.5 days. (3500/200 cal = 17.5) So if you want to lose 20 lbs then it will take you 350 days. Now to make the quicker you weight train to burn more calories which experts say that1 hour of intense weight training burns 450 calories. So if you do that everyday then you now have a deficit of 650 calories which now you will lose 1 pound every 5 days (3500/650 = 5.3) so now it will take 100 days to lose 20lbs which is 3 months.

Me for instance, My BMR is 1527 and I did a 20% deficit down to 1227 each day which is 300 calories, plus I weight train and do some cardio. With all that math I just showed you it will take me 4 months to get to my 20lb goal.

OF COURSE these are not all that accurate for us because I believe we all have a higher metabolism from weight training and burn more calories than our BMR let's on.

Hope this helps!

P.S you can use this same math to see how fast it takes you to gain weight with ANY excess calories whether it be from extra protein or not. I still see so many people thinking they have to load up on protein but not expending the calories.

So BMR is 1500 and you consume 2000 calories a day. Then you are at an excess of 500 calories a day and it takes 3500 calories to gain 1 lb of fat so 3500/500 = 7 so with that excess you will be gaining 1 pound every 7 days. EEKS!

Nice to hear from you Amkey

Thanks for doing the math. I was trying to keep it simple and maybe lost some people.

That thing about the body taking 21 days to notice something changed is absolutely ridiculous. I went off the diet for 4 days straight after thanksgiving and gained like 4 lbs of fat lol. I don't know how any study could say how long somebody's body takes to adapt. For one they dont' give the body enough credit to it's ability to adapt, and second, a person's chemistry varies from person to person.

I appreciate your information Amkey, but I think this thread has gotten away from the topic. I am still dropping fat, the original question was why can't you NOT do cardio and drop fat by lowering calories and lifting weights 6 days a week? It just doesn't work. Numberwise, it should, but in reality, it doesnt.

Hehe, well i can certainly imagine how hard they are, and I believe you when you say they are complete workouts. I know that the training you do takes tremendous amounts of cardiovascular fitness to do too.

But to be honest, I am not interested in that type of training. And I'm not going to lie and make up reasons as to why I won't do them. I'll just be straight out...THEY ARE TOO HARD LOL . I also hear that you need to have very good technique or you can seriously injure yourself with olympic lifts. That's not the reason i stay away, it's more of just that i know they are too hard (deadlifts are bad enough lol). I appreciate your thoughts, and you did answer my question, and in a practical way. Thanks.

Hey Firehawk...

Get your head out of your ass!

I asked you this before, why post a question if you're not going to take peoples advice or even consider alternatives?

I know why, because you're a "know it all." Remember what you told me? "Obviously, I know what I'm doing." That kind of attitude will keep you thinking inside the box, pal. It's like you got blinders on and can only see one-way. Hell, I bet you didn't even read the artice MostMuscle posted yet!

People spend time to answer your questions, give you advice and even educate you to the rationale behind it and you throw it back at them with things like "it's an illogical train of thought", "that's absolutely ridiculous" and it's "TOO HARD"

TOO HARD?!?! WTF is that? Maybe you oughta give up exercise and try basket weaving. You won't lose any fat but at least it won't be too hard.

Firehawk,
I just explained that um yes you can just lift weights and lose fat with calorie restriction and NO CARDIO! If I am correct Cursor does not set aside time for cardio sessions and never has. If I am correct he just loves to play basketball.

"That thing about the body taking 21 days to notice something changed is absolutely ridiculous.I went off the diet for 4 days straight after thanksgiving and gained like 4 lbs of fat lol"

Well it is just an estimated number like everything else. That number also represents dieting correctly and not drastically. If you all of a sudden start eating only 500 calories a days then yes you will see changes before 21 days. As for your gaining 4lbs, yes it works the other way too, when you over eat drastically (which had to be very freaking drastically for you to gain 4lbs in 4 days) of course change will take place before 21. When making a change slowly but surely and healthy it takes a bit for your body to kick in and think hey something is new here.

LadyC,
Great to hear from you as well. Been real busy with buying a house and all and here at work =) Staying on course though =)

If I was a know-it-all I wouldn't ever post questions or ask questions. If you read the end of what Luke said, I specifically stated that he did answer my question and I appreciated it.

Don't take my words out of context 'pal'. I was referring to dropping fat. My results thus far speak for themselves, so OBVIOUSLY I DO know what im doing as far as that goes. Oh that's right, if I don't like YOUR advice you get offensive...boohhoooo.

Oh that's right, I went back and looked up the posts in my journal from you. It all started out because you didn't grasp my comments, and then got bent out of shape when i asked why you were the only one that didn't understand what I was getting at lol. For anyone that wants to view:

http://www.discussfitness.com/showth...&highlight=Dan

It's clear that in 13 whole posts you have made on this site, you choose to criticize people.

I think you sound more like the condescending one around here bro. Hell, I guess since I won't take Luke's advice and do Olympic training, I should just quit altogether. Now who sounds like the village idiot?

Back off the basket weaving... Underwater basket weaving is the hardest sport known to man.
