Will this cause an ACL tear ?

I am attempting to do roman chair lower back muscle workout. I lay on my slanted row machine with my legs totally locked and then bend over with 25 lbs I notice that what is holding me in place is probably my acl's. Can this strengthen them too ? Can it cause them to tear by auto-amputation of a hyper extension or does that only happen when your flying around a soccer field or flying around a ski run? In other words can this happen while not moving but under heavy load ?

thx

You want to assume a position that places the tension squarely on the hamstrings and lower back. If that isn't the case now, and you fell it somwhere you think you shouldn't be feeling it, I wouldn't recommend continuing with the exercise.

Its definately on the hams but the knees are locked and at that max travel position and it seems the only thing that stops them is the acl I believe.

Blade you need not worry. In the knees locked position you describe your PCL actually is taking much more of the tension than your ACL. ACL tears are usually due to a blow to the back of the leg while the lower leg stays planted in the ground and the upper leg is forced forward.
