working out on...off days?

i remember hearing/reading somewhere, some time ago that its a good idea to do a light workout on your off days from the gym (like push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups etc.) because it helps keep the blood flowing through your muscles and helps to repair them faster and build new muscle. is this a good idea?

sometimes if my chest is sore i'll do a few pushups or if my legs are sore do some nice stretches, but only to loosen myself up and not feel so stiff, i don't know if it actually helps repair or build muscle

Actually exerting more strain on the muscles in the form of push-ups etc won't help, it does bring the blood with nutrients to the muscles but at the same time the physical activity breaks the already repaired fibres back apart. To get the blood flowing go for a short jog or something of the sort.
