Anatomy question? Weird bump on lower back

I've got a lump about the size of a small kumquat on my lower back. It is on the right-hand side just above my butt. It is not visible, but you can feel it with your hand, and it kind of aches all the time. It feels kind of lumpy, but is not rock hard. When I press on it, it kind of rolls around - it doesn't hurt when I press on it. I didn't have it before I started lifting. Has anyone else had this? Do you think that it is knotted up muscle?

I know, I know - go to a doctor. I really don't like going to doctors. . .

hi silly,

you should probably get this looked at. SORRY!! my dad had something very similar to what you describe. it turned out to be a cyst thing. he didnt get it checked and it got bigger and he had to have surgery. i think it was possibly dangerous because it could disrupt his spine. but im not sure that it was soft like you say yours is. anyways, it might be just a giant blackhead, i have one in my back, not that big though, more like a large pencil eraser top on my lower back. hubby likes to pop it every week! yah, its disgusting, but hes so sweet to me.

im babbling again...bottom line probably get it checked! sry again

It also could be a fatty tissue deposit. My husband gets those and it is genetic. They are not painful.

Go to a doctor and get it checked.

Yeah, you should definitely bring it to your doc's attention. It's probably nothing but if nothing else, it will give him/her a reference point against which to compare and future changes.

Do some research on the term "lipoma."

ooh - sounds like you and Lady C may have something there. I guess I will call my doctor since it is rather close to my spine. . .

Went to doctor. He touched my back for a minute, then said," Oh it's perfectly round so it's probably just a benign tumour. Don't worry about it unless it starts hurting again or grows bigger."

I felt like he hardly even gave it any consideration. Didn't even ask me any questions. What do you think?

You hope he knows what he's talking about. That is, however, what lipoma is. I'm guessing that he's seen a million of them.

I'd get a second opinion I had a bump like on my neck and the first time I went to see the doctor he told me it was some kind of cist that would never go away but it wasn't harmful and that was it. I went back a few days later saw a different doctor and he told me it was my lymph glands swelling up and that I should take advil and it'll go away. Within a day of taking advil it was gone. He also because of the bump checked me for mono and it turned out I did have mono.
