Breaking into a Run

Hey All,
Went for a walk yesterday in my blue jeans. Then I started jogging till I got tired, then walk, then jog...anyway, was feeling SO GREAT I could barely stop but finally did after about 6 or 7 miles. The thing is that I am not used to that at all. I stupidly went into it full swing. I NEVER jog so my right knee is totally hurting, and today I woke up and my calves and hips are SO SORE!!!!!!
But I would kinda like to get into jogging because of how great I felt!!! And also I'm glad I got sore!!!
For all you joggers, how do I pace myself? I guess I mean, what is a good starting out point so I don't hurt myself, what things do I need to know to make the most of it, is this going to screw up my weightlifting, and also, how often, how far should I go?
(I'm not going to be able to jog straight through either - I'd have to work up to that, I'm walking a couple of blocks, then jogging a couple of blocks).
Any advice on how to make the most of it all (and not lose muscle too) is appreciated.
-Amy

Amy thats crazy!! running in jeans I mean!
awesome that you had the drive to just keep going and that youve found something you like!
to stop the risk of potentialy loosing muscle with running, just make sure that you are taking in adequate calories and restoring lost glycogen stores after your jog.
make sure that your start off with walking, moving into a higher paced walk, then jog to ensure proper warm up. same for cooldown, slowly lower the pace and make sure you stretch well following the jog!

Ya, it was pretty much by accident & ya, I really did enjoy it and want to do more. So would drinking a big 40 oz Gatorade afterwards do it for me then?
What do you think?

What you were doing is perfect. There is a training method called 10 and 1's. You run 10 minutes, walk 1. Continue this for the length of your run. A lot of people actually use it when running a marathon, or even a 10K, which by the way is about 6.2 miles. So running that far is pretty impressive!

Runnersworld.com offers a few different training programs that you can use and adapt to your schedule if you want to check it out!

P.S. When you runs are over an hour is a good time to start adding gatorade or other carb drinks in. You'd want to have a drink every 20 - 25 minutes.
