hello im new and would like to know why im not loosing weight

hello, ive been lurking for a long time now and just recently started working out to loose this awful fat and to become healthier.

im 38 and 5'2 small framed and weigh 147lbs with a body fat at 31.7% i have been strength training with the total body machine that chuck norris endorses since the end of august worked my way up to 10 different exercises at 3 reps each for 30-45 mins 4 nites a week.

my diet isnt bad altho i dont really eat breakfast (i know not good but i am trying to eat a breakfast bar with my one cup of cappicino) im not into eating sweats or junk food or do i eat out very much but that doesnt mean that ocassionally i will splurge. the meals that we do eat i make here and for the most part it is well balanced.

im just not loosing any weight i am however trimming down i have lost almost 2 inches off my thighs and waist, but the scale is not moving. i know i shouldnt complain i do feel it in my clothes im wearing things that i couldnt wear last yr at this time.my husband says that my metabolism hasnt kick in yet for me to start loosing.

so could someone tell me why im not loosing the weight?? my goal is to get back down to 120lbs.

thank you in advance and sorry if this is to long. carol

Hello,

And

I'll let the female athletes here give you their sage counsel. I just wanted to welcome you aboard and encourage you to start your own training journal in the Online Journal forum.

Have a great day!

Could you post what you eat typically? My experince is first women when first starting out never eat enough healthy foods. I had to really convince my wife to loose weight (body fat) she needed to eat 6 times a day. Along with a good workout.

Do not be afraid of weights they are your friend you will not wake up one morning and look like Arnold in his heyday.

What type of workout are you doing just cardio? Are you doing cardio? If so how much? Are you lifting any weights? are you a member of a gym? These are all questions that the people here will need answers to in order to give you the best advice as possible.

Also, if you've been lurking for a while, you'll have noticed your exact comment being discussed numerous times. The scale is not your best friend. What's more important to you? Shrinking your size, developing lean body mass for a faster metabolism and dropping body fat,.....or the number on the scale. Muscle is denser, it's smaller but has weight. Fat is "fluffier" and can lounge around, taking up a lot of volume for the same amount of scale weight a tiny bit of muscle will.

Get your bodyfat tested again and see if that has gone down. If you're changing your shape and your BF has reduced, you're at least starting off on the right track. Prioritize.

I still get hung up on the numbers on the scale once and a while. . . .it only takes a second to realize that my clothes and the mirror are not lying. If it looks good in the reflection - dismiss the number on the dial!!!!!!!

pierini..thank you for the welcome i appreciate!

orkydoc...i eat lean cuts of meats like chicken beef turkey, veggies and fruit and typically eat 4-5xs a day.
i am strenght training...
no im not afraid of weights with this machine im lifting my weight with a little extra weight that is attached to the machine.

merrida..is it really necessary to have that tone just because i have been lurking for a while doesnt mean that i found the answer i was looking for. the number on the scale is important to me just 10 yrs ago when i was in my prime i weighed 115lbs and looked and felt good about myself. i would love to feel that way again. thank you for reminding me that muscle is denser than fat i do realize now i have to gain muscle mass to get rid of the fat. also i measured my bf last nite before posting here.

ladyc... you are so right about that scale if my husband would let me i would throw it out the window for a while!!

hello!! welcome to DF!!

I watched this show on The Discovery Channel called Everst last night. Amazing show, the first episode of the season. On it they had all of the climbers pass a fitness test and this one guy was asked how much he weighed and he replied with "I haven't weighed myself in 10 years, I use a mirror"
It was great to hear this ...
but as a female I do the same thing and just was talking about the "scale" on here a few days ago. It sucks knowing that you work so hard to see different numbers and it sucks that we have all been programed to stick to the scale to tell us how we are doing. If the scales numbers are what you really want to see go down, patience is a virtue. I recently lost 8 pounds, I was 137 and now I am 129 I wanted to be 120 but seeing myself in a mirror, seeing how my clothes fit, ect I know I would be happy at 125.

Time passes for a reason, our bodies change and the way we lose weight also changes, so if you weighed 115 pounds 10 years ago, you may be able to get to 120 but don;t expect it to come right away....again patience is the best thing you can have right now, just stick to it and don't let yourself get frustrated because this is the point where a lot of people turn back to their old ways because they aren't seeing the results THEY want to see but may be changing their bodies without knowing it!

good luck and hope to see you around!

I just saw this post after I just posted but I read it and was like OMG!!! I felt the same way, like how do people do it so fast, why am I doing it all right and not getting anything accomplished? A healthy weight loss IMHO is 1 pound per week, anything more than that and it's more likely to come back

Either these people are lying or they're just losing water weight. Weight loss like that is completely unrealistic. Remember, they are trying to get you to buy a product. So they will say anything to sell it.

If you are getting smaller, you are making progress, regardless of what the scale says. It's really important not to get hung up on the numbers. I can't emphasize that enough.

Well Carol, I am having the same problem, and always have. I eat right and work out and no weight change. I agree with lady C though, If you feel better and look better then don't worry so much with the number on the scale. The only time I lost a significant amount of weight was when I had mono and didn't eat for 4 weeks, but it took a VERY long time afterwards to regain strength. There are many ways to "trick" your matabolism, just keep asking around and someone more knowledgeable than I will give you some really good tips. But dibs for getting after it and trying! Stay with it and you will see the results you want.

The scale is not your friend If you need to know your weight I'd use your weight in combination with your body fat% as your body composition changes you'll see your clothes fitting better, losing inches, but not necessarily weight. If you track your bf% you'll see a better comparison IMO

That being said I still like to see the scale change lol.

I did a weight loss system and did very well on it. I lost 25 lbs and have kept it off for 2 years now...Don't knock it till you try it! They taught me how to eat right!! If it wasn't for them I would not be where I am now! I now work out at the gym 3 times a week and feel pretty good bout myself!

Which one did you use? There are a few diff systems out there that seem ok. I think it depends on the person too. If you're just looking for a quick fix, and then will continue your same ways or go back to them then there is no system that will really work for you.

I tend to agree because anything prepackaged doesn't teach you how to eat the foods you will end up buying and consuming and preparing on your own, from the local grocery, etc. They may give you an idea of portion sizes, but even at that, depending on the system, again, with "artificial treats," you're not learning to adjust your thinking and your tastebuds, (nor ability to select), truly healthy, fresh products.
