Is an XRay the only way, (the ONLY way?)
To figure out what's causing pain in the hip. It's only with motion, particularly extension (must take short steps with left leg, regular steps with right leg). Pain with bringing legs together, not weakness, but pain. The pain pattern follows the adductor brevis, the gracilis, but also the IT Band, and inferior to the patella. What the gosh darn could this be?
Stretching brings about more pain. Of course, stress brings about more pain. Sex brings about two days of lingering pain.
The "status quo" is still pain at about a level-4. Easily exacerbated.
On the opposition's side (the abductors), side lying leg lifts for the abductors are very painful, right from where the femur sets into the acetabulum which is why I brought up that initial question of XRays.
Is there (please?) some other way to R/O the possibility of a structural involvement. The fact that movement brings about pain is giving me hope this is a muscular thing (at least predominantly).
Any thoughts? Queries? Ideas? Cautionary Tales? Throw of the Bones?
I'm all ears.

Merrida, you know more than me about this stuff so there are only two things I can offer.
First, there is some muscular imbalance going on that is the source of what is bothering you and it has manifested itself with the pain you are experiencing. I have some left knee issues going on that I have now come to the conclusion are the result of muscular imbalance (along with overuse).

Don't hang from the chandeliers with your legs like the movies and everything should be fine.

You're a cruel man....taking away the best stuff.
You caught my attention with your knee pain because as of 2 days ago I've started wrapping my knee like I used to in track (except I don't have shin splints). I am having left hip and left knee pain, and I'm confused about what may be causal relationship, or effectual relationship. Dunno. I just,...don't,....know. (<-- say that with pause and emphasis for dramatic effect, -- we all know that's important when visual aids are unavailable).
The fact that I have some days that aren't too bad, and some that have me limping like I've got an artificial hip,.... but the fact I have some days of "less pain" gives me hope it's muscular imbalances that can be remedied.
Not holding you to anything, but out of curiosity, what would you guess needs stretching, lengthening, tightening, strengthening? IOW, what sorts of imbalances and where?
Maybe cuz it's me, I really am not processing this adequately.
All I can think about now is,......without the chandelier,....what about the hooks on the bed posts? They run a close second and may actually work like traction,....

Well for starters, I'd do what I am currently doing which I call my knee PT superset using light weight on the machines and perform 1-leg extensions, 1-leg curls, abductor machine, adductor machine, all with ligh weights and higher reps, suggestion would be a single set of 25 reps each. Maybe also do that donkey kick machine or whatever it is called, and finally some dirty dogs.
If your knee is talking to you and your hip, then you are favoring something and your back will be next.

My back is kicking in already, just very, very recently. I am definitely favoring that whole left side.
If I worked with a client with these complaints, answers would pop into my head....but because it's me, I feel like I'm a doe in headlights and pulling up total blanks.
The pain wakes me up at night, I cannot walk (which is what I usually do to just get around),...I'm a total gimp at the moment (does not look good for a trainer to do so).
I'll do what you recommend and we'll see how it goes. Of course it makes perfect sense, to work all the muscle groups, isolate, avoid compression,....common sense, but man,...it's just like I went into denial mode or trying to trick myself into this is stress related and a "non issue" just a manifestation. Agh.
Thanks Mr. P.....I appreciate your input.

Maybe a deep muscle massage will relax the pain for a bit. Then maybe you can focus more on getting more balanced. I dunno either.

I repaired a Dodge 1500 DUB rear quarter and spent 6hrs on my knees.
Now for some reason i feel like a horse had a problem with me and hoffed my thigh.

During my surgical rotation, the surgeon flatly stated he fixed 90% of what came through his door with RICE. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation)
So either it's good advice, or he was a lousy surgeon....
