Odd "woman" question

I don't know how to search for this kind of topic so i'm sorry if it has been discussed before.

What do you all do during "that time of month"?

I've never been able to stick to working out for as long as I have and i'm actually enjoying it. But now this week i'm in so much pain and well you know the rest... I don't see how in the world I can run let alone lift!
I ran the day before yesterday when it was just starting and it felt like someone was stabbing me lol I just pushed through it..

In highschool I could have sworn when I was this active it would be less flow and less pain. Not too sure why it's not happening now days!

Hi Supra,

I don't know if the question has even been discussed here. I've never had pain during TOM so that has not detered me but I have had other conditions which I had to accomodate. I ended up just taking the time off or doing bodyweight or light dance and pilates type video workouts.

If I was just in pain I'd take an OTC pill and carry on with life. I'd also make sure to see a doctor to make sure that sever pain was not from a treatable condition.

Maybe the others have more to contribute.

I've been to a doc before about it and she gave me some WONDERFUL pills and put me on BC which helped a LOT. I'm going to call around today and see if I can get back on BC. I don't have insurance anymore so thats why i've been off of it and dealing with the pain.

If I take the week off from running will the pain in my legs happen again once I start back? that sucked...

HI, Supra!

I tend to play it by ear. Most of the time I don't take any time off during TOTM, but in the past I would either be soooooooooo exhaused or in too much pain and would just skip the worst day of the cycle. Also Aleive OTC medicine seems to be the only thing that helps my cramps, they are ususally only bad for one day though.

Oh one more thing, even if you can't get yourself to go running, do you think you could try walking on the treadmill? sometimes once you get moving you end up feeling a lot better.

Good sugestion GG. Even going for a walk not a run will keep your muscles and joints in good shape. A week off every 3 weeks is not going to set you back. It will only slow down your progress a bit.

I'll get up tomorrow and walk then. No treadmill unfortunatly but i'll make do. I do get some odd looks running around town.. apparently people don't understand exercise around here lol. One of our city workers asked what I was doing.. I told him uhm running.. he asked Why.. I said to get into shape.. the other says "are you going into the military?" lol no.. :
I wonder why we needed our own cascade system? Our guys suck air down like it's going out of style.

Your story sounds familar. Yes, you need to go see the doctor. I am on a 3 month BC (no TOTM for 12 weeks). Mine is 100% related to endometriosis. It sounds like you might be having something similar.

I agree with gymgirl -Aleve is the best you can do OTC - it is a pain killer AND anti-inflamitory.

ouchie. I hear endometriosis is VERY painful. A friend of mine in HS had it and was always in the worst pain. I think she had some surgeries or something to help?

TOTM only once every 12 weeks sounds pretty nice though!

If you go on depo, many women don't have it at all! Depo rocks!

BC definitely helped me, but before I took BC, I would just take ibuprofen. I saw a study saying that exercise helped cramps because of the endorphin release, but if you're just miserable, it isn't realistic to force yourself to exercise.

Some people like to use a heating pad, too. Have you tried that?

I have had surgeries for it. It grows back. The best method is prevent ovulation (in my case). The fiberous tissue is even attached to my kidney and bladder. Full bladders for long periods can be painful.

I DO like the once every 12 weeks!

Depo put you into temporary menopause with all the side effects (hot flashes, bone loss, etc.) and you have to go off every 6 months. Then you can go back on again. Quite frankly I would want to go through menopause symptoms just once in life and hold onto my bone preserving estrogen as long as possible. But everyone has their own limits and tolerances.

For me at that TOTM I just tend to get emotional (will cry for silly reasons) and extra hungry. Also I might get a little lethargic but I will usually just push through and get to the gym anyway, it makes ya feel better! I don't get much in the way of pain, some tummy cramps for one day, therefore I consider myself quite lucky. I get off easily when it comes to periods! The bloating is killer though, i get a 'distended' belly and it looks like I have a bun in the oven! No, make it a loaf.. lol

Birth Control pills, not for me. I don't like to mess with my body like that, having a period is part of being a woman and it is a natural thing. If I didn't have my period i would worry that something was wrong with me.

Even if you have a period on BC its not a REAL period right? I'd rather take the periods and be happy that my 'insides/womanly parts' are working the way they should lol

I wouldn't take Depo because I don't like the idea of all that... but normal BC I like because it regulates you. I then KNOW when I start instead of guessing. Mine NEVER stay reg.
And oddly I get one month where my TOTM isn't that bad at all.. then the next month it KILLS me.. for at least 3 days. One day is the I can hardly move day.. then the other 2 it's just really not comfy. Then the rest it's 'eh it'll stop soon. And it's easier to push my buttons. The Boyfriend found that out lol last month was a easy month. The day I was in MAJOR pain and he knew it... he did a major no no and for the first time in almost 2 months we had a fight lol He admits it's his fault.. for doing it AND for doing it on THAT day.

I was going to walk today but forgot I have a firefighter funeral to go to. These are sad.. really sad.

But i'll try to make it to the doc when I have the money! Not having insurance kills.

Not a lady, but I see some outdated information here so I'm going to chime in. If not welcome, sorry.

There is a new formulation of depo which is at a lower dose. It is used once every 3 months and is just a subcutaneous injection. Many women still have periods while on it. Issues of bone loss, libido loss, thinning of vaginal tissues...the menopuasal symptoms can be taken care of by use of a small dose 2.5-5mg/day of methytestosterone taken orally. Yeah, it's a 17N, but the dose is so small there is no hepatotoxicity.

With proper management, depo can now be used long term. It's also great for controlling the bad symptoms for women who get ovarian cysts and have very painful periods. The weaker dosage that is now used doesn't make women fat like the old dose did either.

Someone should tell my gynocologist, the head of the most progressive women's health research facility in Eastern Canada! She's the one who admitted to me these side affects still exist.

No offence Andy but some people can tolerate hormone treatment and some can't. Those that can't are not as simple to manage as throwing a balancing hormone in the mix. This is not mathematics where you get the equation right and it all works out. HRT, depo, BCP, progesterone cremes... it is all bad for those who do not tolerate messing with their own hormone cycles. Some people just like to believe that we are being overly difficult or sensitive, but that is not the truth. You'd have to experience it to understand.
